Mornington Best Bets – Thursday, October 22

Continue your week with our Mornington best bets, highlighting the key runners ready to help you out on Thursday!

Mornington: Race 3 – Maiden Plate (2450m)
No. 5 Grey Sabre

GREY SABRE (5) has drawn a nice gate for this assignment back over 2400m.

David Noonan’s gelding has put together a pair of tiday place efforts at Moe leading in and should present rock-hard fit now given both runs came over 2000m.

He maps to roll straight to the front from barrier 3 and will take catching under Logan McNeil, who retains the ride.

Mornington R3 – Tobin Brothers Celebrating Lives Mdn Plate
Open Race time:
5. Grey Sabre (3)
J: Logan Mcneil 59.5kg
86723 T: David Noonan
Racing well recently. Last start sat on the speed and boxed on steadily 3rd of 12 in a Mdn-Sw at Moe on September 24 over 2050m, 2.75 len behind Jean Georges carrying 59.5kg at $26. The race before that set the pace for much of the race 2nd of 7 in a Mdn-Sw at Moe on September 8 over 2069m, on heavy track; 1.3 len behind Jonquil with 59.5kg at $31. Well placed. Maps well and should take catching.

Mornington: Race 5 – Maiden Plate (1500m)
No. 11 Prime Force
Tip of The Day

PRIME FORCE (11) gets the blinkers third-up after fading fast up on the speed at Pakenham on the synthetic last time out.

Keep in mind he was 1200m up to 1400m that day, while his debut effort at Bairnsdale to run a place was encouraging.

Fitter now and likely to appreciate a bit more running room away from the fence, he looks a good bet to roll straight to the front and give his rivals something to catch.

Mornington R5 – 3mp Mdn Plate
Open Race time:
11. Prime Force (7)
J: Luke Cartwright 57kg
35 T: Peter G Moody & Katherine Coleman
Had two starts to date. When well in the market at debut, led but faded 3rd of 11 in a Mdn-Sw at Bairnsdale on September 20 over 1200m, 1.75 len behind Luminary Miss carrying 57kg at $3.90. Last start led to the turn then faded 5th of 8 in a 3yo Mdn-Sw at Pakenham Synthetic on October 5 over 1400m, 5.5 len behind Autumn Rainbow with 58kg at $10. Can bounce back.

Mornington: Race 7 – Class 1 Handicap (1200m)
No. 10 Determined Rose

DETERMINED ROSE (10) appears to be a talented filly in the making for Jerome Hunter.

This daughter to Hellbent came out and won on debut here earlier in the year, bolting two lengths clear in the end on a bottomless heavy track.

How she handles a dry deck this time is the query, but she’s shown plenty in two recent trials to suggest she’s forward enough for this.

Mornington R7 – Peninsula Kubota Hcp (C1)
Open Race time:
10. Determined Rose (8)
J: Daniel Stackhouse 56kg
1x T: Jerome Hunter
Resuming after a break; only one run when won by 2 len in a 2yo Hcp at this track on June 8 over 1200m in the wet defeating Centenary Florin carrying 57kg at $12. Looks forward enough after a recent trial win. Very good on debut and can remain unbeaten.

Mornington: Race 8 – BM56 Handicap (1200m)
No.6 Pull My Finger

PULL MY FINGER (6) has drawn wide, which might be an advantage given he has a tendency to blow the start.

He’s competing with the blinkers off for the first time following a pair of place effort at Bairnsdale, the latest coming against a small field where the wet track may have also been a factor.

This is an open contest with a handful of chances, but if he gets away cleanly and finds cover, his best is good enough.

Mornington R8 – Sportsbet Race Replays (Bm56) Hcp
Open Race time:
6. Pull My Finger (11)
J: Michael Dee 60kg
15423 T: Amy & Ash Yargi
Form hard to fault. At the latest run 3rd of 7 in a Bm56 at Bairnsdale on October 12 over 1200m, on a slow track; 3.5 len behind Sub Gauge with 60kg at $4.20. Before that ran on from midfield; 2nd of 12 in a 0 – 56 at Bairnsdale on September 20 over 1200m, neck behind Punic War with 60kg at $4.40. Will take holding out.
