I am of the opinion that good Japanese staying form should never be ignored, and I subsequently have Breakup on top in the Caulfield Cup 2023.
Breakup has never tasted success at the highest level of racing, but he is a Group 2 winner in Japan, and he performed admirably in races like the Hanshin Daishoten and Tenno Sho earlier this year; races that arguably stronger than this Caulfield Cup.
He drew ideally at Wednesday night’s Caulfield Cup barrier draw, and under Damian Lane, I’m confident that he will be right in the finish of this race.
I’ve had something on Soulcombe in each of his three starts back from a break, and he takes his place in the Caulfield Cup field in peak order, and ready to strike.
Having easily accounted for them in the Heatherlie Stakes here at The Heath first-up in September, the Frankel gelding has since finished fourth in the Underwood and third in the Turnbull, and getting out to a mile and a half this week is absolutely ideal.

I thought he was decent when sixth, beaten just over two lengths in the Underwood when resuming this time, and he’s a horse that tends to enjoy good improvement with a run under his belt.
There are a few at odds in Caulfield Cup betting with genuine winning claims, including Francesco Guardi.
It is unfortunate that he wasn’t entered for the Melbourne Cup last year, because his spring form was exceptional, and he ended his prep with an entirely dominant performance in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup.
While he’s yet to strike in three starts back this time, there’s no doubt that Francesco Guardi has improved with each of them, and he’ll absolutely eat up the mile and a half.
