The W H Stocks Stakes is a race for mares aged four-years-old and above run under the lights at The Valley on Manikato Stakes Night in late September each Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
A Group 2 event offering $300,000 in prize money, the W H Stocks Stakes is often simply referred to as the Stocks Stakes and is conducted over 1600m (1514m in 2024) at weight-for-age.
The race was first run in 1973 and has been won by a number of quality mares including Atlantic Jewel (2013) and Princess Jenni (2019).
Mares may use the W H Stocks Stakes as a lead-up to the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) run at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival on Derby Day.
Pride Of Jenni ran second in the 2023 Stocks Stakes before completing the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes – Champions Mile double on successive Saturdays at Flemington that Melbourne Cup Carnival.
In 2023 Amelia’s Jewel saluted as the odds-on favourite setting a new track record of 1 minute 34.37 seconds over the 1600m.
The WA-trained mares went back-to-back with Alsephina successful the following year in a slick 1 minute 32.33 seconds but over a lesser distance of 1514m.

Alsephina ($3.70), trained in WA by Grant & Alana Williams, won the 2024 WH Stocks Stakes under the lights at The Valley with jockey Blake Shinn flashing home late aboard the Group 1 placed daughter of Star Turn who relished a Good rated track off a lead-up third in the wet in the Let’s Elope Stakes.
