Run over 2,000 metres, the Wakeful Stakes is a Group 2 race taking place at Flemington Racecourse. With a $300,000 prize purse, it attracts some of Australia’s best fillies and takes place on the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Starting out as a Principal Race, this race was upgraded to Group 2 status in 1979.
This race serves as a good lead up for the 2,500 metre VRC Oaks held the following Thursday with Aristia (2018), Miami Bound (2019), Willowy (2021) and Treasurethe Moment (2024) the latest fillies to complete the Wakeful Stakes – VRC Oaks double.
Following her 2024 win, Treasurethe Moment would go on to salute in her next five starts not only claiming that year’s VRC Oaks but also returning in the autumn of 2025 to do the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes – Australian Oaks double and then return in the spring for a first-up Memsie Stakes victory.

The 2025 Wakeful Stakes takes place on Saturday the 1st of November 2025 as part of Victoria Derby Day, which is the first of the famous four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Along with the Wakeful Stakes and the Group 1 $2 million Victoria Derby (2500m) the other key races on the Derby Day card include:
