Victoria Derby
Looking for early information on this year’s Victoria Derby? The expert tipsters at Neds have put together everything you need to know before this year’s race.
The time-honoured Victoria Derby is the blue chip race for three year old stayers during the spring and is held on Day 1 of Flemington’s iconic Melbourne Cup Carnival.
The VRC Derby runs as part of Derby Day, which is known as a day for racing purists with all events on the card holding Group status. Derby Day is also when the punters show up in black and white attire and takes place on the Saturday prior to Melbourne Cup Day, which is held on the first Tuesday of November each year.
Contested over 2500m, the Victoria Derby is a set weights event run and won since 1855. A stallion-making race, it now offers $2 million in prize money and no filly has won since Frances Tressady (1923) with most opting to take on their own kind two days later in the Kennedy Oaks.
The Moonee Valley Vase is a key lead-up into the Victoria Derby with Efficient (2006) the last to do the double.

Additional factors to take into considerations are as follows:

- Odds – A host of recent Victoria Derby winners over the past decade have jumped at double-digit odds including Johnny Get Angry ($21 in 2020)
- Barrier – With a sharp turn before a back straight, establishing a good position early on can prove critical.
