A Group 1 race for almost 40 years, the Victoria Derby is the blue chip race for three year old stayers during the VRC’s Spring Racing Carnival.

Which Horse Will Win The Victoria Derby

The best way to pick who will win the Victoria Derby is to take into account the form, assess the barriers, consider the weight the horse will carry, among other factors.

Additional factors to take into considerations are as follows:

  • Favourites – Between the years of 2006-2015, the favourite has only one the Victoria Derby once.
  • Odds – 12 winners in the past 30 years have started the race with double digit odds.
  • Barrier – With a sharp turn before a back straight, establishing a good position early on can prove critical.

Victoria Derby 2018 Tips

Favourite: Thinkin’ Big. Trained by the powerhouse duo of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, this colt has seen mostly success in its first season, with a majority of results being wins and only at least a placing.

Best Bet: Approach Discreet. This short distance runner has plenty of left-handed racetrack experience, having raced at tracks all over Victoria. This Darren Weir trained Colt has two first place finishes, and has never placed lower than fourth.

Best Roughie: Muswellbrook. Coming from the promising house of David & B Hayes & T Dabernig, this Gelding started racing in 2017, but will still be 3 years old at the time of the race. Typically finishing in 2nd place, but paying out great odds, he represents great value for a place.
