Underwood Stakes Winners
From the race’s inauguration back in 1924 right through until 2024 we have a complete list of past Underwood Stakes winners. Whittier won the opening two editions of the Underwood Stakes in 1924 and 1925. He also won back-to-back editions of the Caulfield Cup the same two years.
Triple champion Ajax (1938-40) made history winning the Underwood Stakes on three consecutive years.
Zaaki won the 2021 Underwood Stakes as the odds-on favourite before being scratched from that year’s Cox Plate as the top elect on race day morning.
Bonneval (2017) was the first Underwood Stakes winning mare since Tristarc back in 1985.
After winning the race for the first time in 2016, Black Heart Bart made history returning three years later to salute as a nine-year-old in 2019.
In 2020 Russian Camelot became the latest three-year-old Underwood Stakes winner.

Other notable Underwood Stakes winners include Phar Lap (1931), Bonecrusher (1986), Tie The Knot (1998), So You Think (2010), and It’s A Dundeel (2013).
The 2022 Underwood Stakes winner Alligator Blood was enormous in his first 1800m assignment leading all-the-way before finding another gear to hold off the challengers including the previous year’s champion, Zaaki, who could only mange to run third in his title defence.
The 2023 Underwood Stakes winner Alligator Blood returned to go back-to-back as the $3.60 favourite on the short turnaround off a Makybe Diva Stakes second the Saturday prior and was ridden to victory by jockey Damien Oliver during his swansong spring in the saddle.
The 2024 Underwood Stakes winner Buckaroo was excellent third-up off a Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes win in Sydney to put 3.5 lengths on his rivals as a $9 shot in betting for trainer Chris Waller.
