Tramway Stakes, Randwick Racecourse

Run over 1,400 metres Tramway Stakes is a Group 2 race taking place at Randwick Racecourse as part of the Chelmsford Stakes Day card in early September each Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

With a $300,000 prize purse as of 2023 it attracts a quality field of middle-distance spring hopefuls tougher Group 1 races including the George Main Stakes (1600m) – now run as the King Charles III Stakes – and Epsom Handicap (1600m) both run over the Randwick mile. Sincero (2011) was the last galloper to complete the Tramway Stakes – George Main Stakes double, while Kolding (2nd in 2020) was the last Tramway graduate to back-up and win the George Main next start.

The Tramway Stakes is run at set weights plus penalties with the winner earning an Epsom Handicap ballot exemption. Hauraki (2016) was the last horse to win the Tramway Stakes – Epsom Handicap double in a single season.

In 2021 Zaaki won the Tramway Stakes as the favourite before heading south to salute in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m). He was third next-up in the Caulfield Stakes and went on to win Flemington’s Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) after being scratched from that year’s Cox Plate field on race morning as the favourite. Zaaki further franked the Tramway form the following autumn winning the $5 million The All-Star Mile (1600m).

Zaaki returned to salute as the odds-on favourite in the Tramway Stakes before successfully defending his Mackinnon Stakes (VRC Champions Stakes) title.

The Tramway Stakes now serves as a key lead-up into the new $1 million 7 Stakes (1600m) race held the next month at Randwick on The Shorts Day offering the winner an Epsom Handicap ballot exemption.

The 2024 Tramway form was franked with the winner Royal Patronage going on to run third in the $1 million 7 Stakes, Epsom Handicap and $2 million Hill Stakes. He also returned in the autumn of 2025 to win the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes and finish second in that year’s Doncaster Mile quinella.

In 2025 Pericles won the race for a second time having also saluted back in 2023.

Additional factors to consider when picking the Tramway Stakes winner include:

  • Sydney Advantage – Local horses, especially those that have gained experience on the Randwick track, have a strong record in the race.
  • Favourite Factor – Until the back-to-back wins of Dreamforce (2019, 2020) and Zaaki (2021, 2022) no Tramway Stakes winner had jumped at single-figures since 2011.

Tramway Stakes Favourites 2025

Favourites to win the Tramway Stakes 2025 include Joe Pride’s eight-year-old Private Eye coming off a first-up Group 2 PB Lawrence win in Melbourne, returning Super Seth four-year-old Linebacker who won the Randwick Guineas in the autumn, and Randwick Guineas & Rosehill Guineas placegetter Swiftfalcon

In 2019 and again in 2020 at the same price Dreamforce ($3.30) became the first single-figure chance in Tramway Stakes betting to win since Sincero ($4.80 in 2011).

Zaaki ($2.30 in 2021 and $1.90 in 2022) is the latest Tramway Stakes favourite to win making it four consecutive victories for the favourites between 2019 and 2022.
