The Tapp-Craig is a newly created race for three-year-olds held for the first time in October of 2022 on Silver Eagle Day at Royal Randwick and won by Rubick filly Opal Ridge.
For the second edition in 2023 the event moved to Rosehill Gardens on Hill Stakes Day and saw a second filly take it out with the Hawkes Racing-trained Makarena.
Serving as a key support act on the card now headlined by the lucrative Group 2 $2 million Hill Stakes (1900m), the event is now Listed race worth $500,000.
The race is contested over 1400m at set weights plus penalties.
The Tapp-Craig is the premiere lead-up to the Group 2 $1 million Callander-Presnell (1600m), formerly run as the Stan Fox Stakes, which took place over a mile for the first time in 2022.
The top three placegetters out of the Tapp-Craig results are exempt from Callander-Presnell ballot.

The 2024 Tapp-Craig takes place on Saturday the 12th of October 2024 as part of Sydney’s Hill Stakes Day at Rosehill. The meeting other key events are the:
- Group 2 $2,000,000 Hill Stakes (1900m),
- $1,500,000 Alan Brown Stakes (1400m),
- Group 2 $300,000 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m),
- Group 3 $500,000 Gloaming Stakes (1800m), and the

Closing time for the 2024 Tapp-Craig nominations is 11 AM on the Monday of race week.
tapp-craig 2024 Weights
The race is run with set weights plus penalties. Base Weight: Colts and Geldings 55kg, Fillies 53kg. 1) The winner of a listed race to carry an additional 1kg; 2) The winner of a group three race to carry an additional 2kg; 3) The winner of a group two race to carry an additional 2.5kg; 4) The winner of a group one race to carry an additional 3.5kg. Penalties are not cumulative. If a ballot is required it will be done on total prizemoney (not including any bonuses). If equal then by lot.
Apprentices cannot claim.
Final 2024 Tapp-Craig weights will be declared by 4 PM on the Tuesday of race week with weights on the final acceptors to be published in our above Tapp-Craig Field section.
