The Sydney Stakes is a lucrative $2 million Group 3 event held on The Everest Day in Sydney each October.
The 1200m sprint race’s prize money was boosted from $500,000 to $2 million ahead of the 2022 edition and it is now one of the richest races on the card along with $2 million The Kosciuszko for country-trained horses.
As of 2023 the race formerly known as the George Main Stakes runs on The Everest Day as the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes and offers $5 million in prize money.
First held in 1968 as City Tattersall’s Lightning the weight-for-age event makes a nice consolation prize for sprinters that failed to gain a start in the Group 1 $20 million The Everest (1200m) race held at the same meeting.
There are six emergency runners named for The Everest field each year and those horses can also be entered for the Sydney Stakes but must contest the world’s richest turf race should they get a run.
Runners out of the Sydney Stakes often have a final spring run in the $3 million Winners Stakes (1300m) which is known in 2024 as the Russell Balding Stakes.
The form out of the 2023 Sydney Stakes was franked with the third placed mare, Bella Nipotina, going on to win a host of feature races most notably the $20 million The Everest a year later to the day in 2024!

The Bjorn Baker-trained dual $4 million The Quokka champion in WA, Overpass ($5.50), was excellent resuming on The Everest Day to dominate the Syndey Stakes 2024 results for a lucrative first-up win with Joshua Parr aboard the now six-year-old who was overlooked for a shot at this year’s $20 million The Everest.
Last year’s The Everest winner Think About It meanwhile fell during his run in the Sydney Stakes on Saturday due to a bleeding attack but was up on his feet and walking back to the stalls post-race looking to have escaped serious injury.
