Holding Group 1 status since 1979, the Spring Champion Stakes is a set weights race for three-year-olds conducted over 2000m at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse during the Spring Racing Carnival.
The Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Rosehill is an excellent lead-up into the Spring Champion Stakes with Shadow Hero (2019), Sharp ‘N’ Smart (2022), and El Castello (2024) the latest to do the double, the latter when the event ran as a midweek at Warwick Farm over 1600m after being rescheduled due to the wet weather in Sydney that spring.
This race can be a good lead in to the Victoria Derby in Melbourne during the iconic Melbourne Cup Carnival. Ace High (2017) was the last horse to complete the Spring Champion Stakes – Victoria Derby double.
Plenty of excellent champions of the turf have won the Spring Champion Stakes during their three-year-old seasons including Kingston Town (1979), Tie The Knot (1997), Savabeel (2004), and the filly Yankee Rose (2016).
In 2020 Montefilia made history as the first filly to complete the Flight Stakes – Spring Champion Stakes double. Montefilia also finished third in that year’s VRC Oaks trifecta and the following autumn’s Rosehill Guineas results.
The 2021 Flight Stakes winning filly Never Been Kissed ran second next-up to Profondo in that year’s Spring Champion Stakes results.
In 2022 the Spring Champion Stakes, now worth $2 million in stakes, was moved back a week and now runs on the same day as Melbourne’s Cox Plate.
