The Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes is a handicap event taking place at Caulfield Racecourse in November during the late stages of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival having been moved from its previous September time slot ahead of the 2023 edition.
Originally known as the Invitation Stakes, and still registered with this name, it has progressed through a range of names based on various sponsorships. Its current name is in honour of Sir Rupert Clarke, former chairman of the Victorian Amateur Turf Club.
Offering $1 million in prize money, the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes runs over 1400m and has been won by plenty of nice types over the years including Manikato (1978), Encosta De Lago (1996), Exceed And Excel (2003), and more recently Begood Toya Mother (2019).
For the first time in 2023 the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winner also earned a guaranteed start in the following autumn’s $4 million The All-Star Mile race held in 2024 on March 16 at Caulfield Racecourse.
It was the first of eight ‘Win and You’re In’ race for the 2024 All-Star Mile.
