The Rosehill Gold Cup is a 2000m middle-distance staying race held at Royal Randwick (moved from Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in 2025) in late October or early November each spring as part of the lucrative Golden Eagle Race Day in Sydney.
Part of the wider $60 million The Everest Carnival, the meeting is headlined by the four-year-olds facing off in the $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) and runs on the same date as Melbourne’s coveted Victoria Derby Day card at Flemington.
The Rosehill Gold Cup was inaugurated in the same year as the Golden Eagle (2019) and is a quality handicap race open to gallopers aged three-years-old and above.
It officially gained Group 3 status in 2024 the same year the $20 million The Everest became a Group 1 race.
Racing NSW offer a $500,000 bonus to any Rosehill Gold Cup winner that previously wins any of these four earlier events: Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m), the Group 2 Hill Stakes (1800m), the Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m), or the St Leger (2600m).
In 2021 Think It Over made history claiming the Hill Stakes – Craven Plate – Rosehill Gold Cup treble to claim the million-dollar bonus and take his career prize money up over $4 million. He continued on to frank the form the following autumn running well in a number of feature races including winning the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) in 2022.
Should a horse run in any of those earlier Sydney Spring Racing Carnival races without success before winning the Rosehill Gold Cup that year, they are eligible for a $100,000 bonus.
Kembla Grange’s $1 million The Gong (1600m) held in mid to late November makes a nice next-up target for Rosehill Gold Cup graduates.
