The win saw him firm into outright favourite for the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) on October 4 while the Caulfield Cup is also a likely target for the improving import.

Run over 2,000 metres, the Kingston Town Stakes is a Group 3 race taking place at Randwick Racecourse in mid-late September as part of The Shorts Day in Sydney. With a $250,000 prize purse as of 2023, it attracts a quality field of staying types looking to target the upcoming Group 1 features.
This race should not be confused with the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) – now run as the Northerly Stakes – held in Perth each summer.
Once known as the STC Cup, this race has been run over various distances, including 2400, 1900 and 2000 metres. Since 1984 it has been named after the champion horse Kingston Town.
The race serves as a key lead-up to Randwick’s Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) on Epsom Day offering the winner a ballot exemption and Herculian Prince (2010) and Just Fine (2023) are the latest to do the double.
Graduates out of the Kingston Town Stakes may also head to Melbourne for the Spring Cups. In 2021 Montefilia improved on a second in the Kingston Town Stakes to win The Metropolitan next start before a fourth in that year’s Caulfield Cup results.
In 2022 Knight’s Order franked the Kingston Town Stakes form after running third in the Group 3 when third again in the Caulfield Cup results, ninth in the Melbourne Cup that November, and third in the following autumn’s 2023 Sydney Cup trifecta.
The Kingston Town Stakes consistently attracts quality runners and often serves as a springboard to Group 1 success, as seen in 2024 when winner Eliyass went on to place third in the Turnbull Stakes trifecta. However, it was the runner-up Ceolwulf who truly emerged as the standout, later securing a memorable Group 1 double in the Epsom Handicap and King Charles III Stakes.
