Hobart Cup, Elwick Racecourse

Run over 2,400 metres on a Sunday in early February, the Hobart Cup is one of the three big races during the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.

Currently holding Group 3 status, the Hobart Cup offers $300,000 in prize money as of 2023 and is the first leg of the popular Tasmanian Cups double.

The second leg is the Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m) held a fortnight later and Eastender (2019) was the last horse to complete the double.

Brallos (1976-77) was the last back-to-back Hobart Cup winner. Since then there has been just one other horse to win multiple editions of the race with the marvel Geegees Blackflash saluting in 2012 and again three years later in 2015.

The Hobart Cup Carnival kicks off the Friday prior with the Group 3 Bow Mistress Trophy (1200m) for fillies and mares.

The 2022 Hobart Cup form was franked with the four-length winner Ho Ho Khan running second next-up in the Launceston Cup before a trip to Melbourne for a fourth in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at 60/1.

Which Horse Will Win The Hobart Cup in 2023?

The best way to pick which horse will win the Hobart Cup in 2022 is to take into account their lead-up Tasmanian summer racing form, assess the barriers, consider the weight each horse will carry and look for past graduates of the same event from the season prior.

Additional factors to consider when picking the Hobart Cup winner include:

  • Summer Form – In-form local horses coming off good lead-up form from earlier summer races in Tasmania have a strong record in the race.
  • Distance – Genuine stayers proven over the mile and a half are the best bet.
