The Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes is one of the key races held in Sydney over the spring for three-year-old horses, the 1400m showdown taking place at Rosehill Racecourse on the fourth Saturday of September.
Elevated to its current elite level status in 2009 the event offers $1 million in prize money. It first ran in 1978 as the Peter Pan Stakes, named in honour of dual Melbourne Cup winner Peter Pan (1932, 1934).
The race name changed to the Golden Rose Stakes in 2003 and has been won by many turf greats during their three-year-old seasons including in recent years Exosphere (2005), Trapeze Artist (2017), and The Autumn Sun (2018) and Ole Kirk (2020) who both went on to win that spring’s Group 1 Caulfield Guineas.
The Golden Rose Stakes is also now the middle leg of the prestigious “Grand Slam” series of races that begins with the two-year-olds in the $5 million Golden Slipper and concludes with the four-year-olds running in the $10 million The Golden Eagle. There is a huge bonus on offer for any galloper that manages to win all three races over their career.
Golden Rose horses may also now continue on to target Randwick’s $1 million Callander-Presnell (1600m) run over the mile in place of the now defunct Bondi Stakes. In 2020 Peltzer improved on a Golden Rose fifth to win the second edition of the Bondi Stakes before the race was replaced ahead of the 2022 spring carnival by the new look Stan Fox Stakes / Callander-Presnell race.
Broadsiding (2024) is the only horse to win the Golden Rose Stakes first-up. He would go on to run third in that year’s Cox Plate trifecta before success in the following autumn’s Rosehill Guineas.

Which Horse Will Win The GOLDEn rose stakes in 2025
The best way to pick which horse will win the Golden Rose Stakes in 2025 race is to take into account their lead-up spring racing form, assess the Golden Rose barriers and consider the weights.
Additional Golden Rose form factors to consider include:
- Out Wide – Plenty of recent Golden Rose winners over the past decade have jumped from a double-digit barrier.
- Boys’ Club – No filly has beaten the boys home in the race since Forensics (2008).
- Last Start Winners – The majority of the Golden Rose winners in the past 10 years came off a lead-up win. The last Golden Rose winner to come off a last start victory was historic first-up champion Broadsiding (2024) whose previous run was a Group 1 J.J. Atkins win in Brisbane over the winter.
- Lead-Up Run – The Group 2 Run To The Rose is the key lead-up into the Golden Rose with Bivouc (2019) the last to do the double. Militarize (5th in 2023) was the last Golden Rose winner to come off a lead-up run in the Run To The Rose.
