Run over 1,500 metres each year in Sydney at Rosehill Gardens as part of the Tancred Stakes Day program, the Emancipation Stakes is a Group 2 race with a $300,000 prize purse as of 2024.

The event is open only to fillies and mares and serves as a nice next-up option for female gallopers coming off a Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) run.

The best out of the Emancipation Stakes often head to Randwick during ‘The Championships’ for a shot at the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) – recently known as the Coolmore Legacy Stakes. 

The Emancipation Stakes winner earns a ballot exemption for the Queen Of The Turf Stakes.

Atishu (2nd in 2023) was the last Emancipation Stakes graduate to go on to win the Queen Of The Turf Stakes.

In 2022 the Emancipation Stakes winner Promise Of Success went on to frank the form in the spring winning the $2 million The Invitation at Randwick that October.

Tancred Stakes Day 2025 was called off on Saturday due to heavy rainfall with all 10 races, including the 2025 Emancipation Stakes, postponed until Tuesday April 1.
