Wallen was the inaugural Doomben 10,000 winner in 1933 when the event first ran as the Doomben Newmarket Handicap.

The following year in 1934 Lough Neagh won and would go on to become known as the ‘Iron Horse’ enjoying an illustrious turf career.

A number of very good sprinters have added their name to the Doomben 10,000 honour role over the years including dual champions Chief De Beers (1995, 1998); Falvelon (2001-02); Prince Trialia (1990–91); and Black Onyx (1969–70).

English (2018) and Bella Nipotina (2024) are the latest Doomben 10,000 winning mares.

The Bostonian holds the current Doomben 10,000 record over the 1200m winning in 2020 in a time of 1 minute 08:97 seconds.

The 2021 Doomben 10,000 winner Eduardo would continue on to run third in that year’s $15 million (now $20 million) The Everest in the spring and win the Winners Stakes.

The 2022 Doomben 10,000 winner was the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained favourite, three-year-old Mazu ($3.30), who made it six straight wins.

Mazu (2022) and Giga Kick (2023) are the latest three-year-olds to win the Doomben 10,000. The last filly to win was Sea Siren (2012).

The 2023 Doomben 10,000 winner was the brilliant Clayton Douglas-trained three-year-old The Everest hero Giga Kick who jumped odds on at $1.65 and, despite missing the kick, was given an ace ride by Craig Williams out wide to run down The Quokka champ Overpass and salute for the punters with last year’s winner Mazu in third.

The 2024 Doomben 10,000 winner was the Ciaron Maher-trained mare Bella Nipotina ($7) who flashed home late out wide first-up to snare victory right on the line over the beaten favourite I Wish I Win thanks to a perfectly timed ride by jockey Craig Williams.
