Run over 1,100 metres, The Rosebud is a Listed race taking place at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in mid-August each year. With a $200,000 prize purse as of 2023, it attracts a quality line-up of promising three-year-old sprinters eyeing tougher assignments over the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
In 2022 The Rosebud was moved from the Missile Stakes Day program to run a week later as the feature race at Rosehill on The Rosebud Day.
The Rosebud, contested under quality handicap conditions, serves as a key lead-up into the coveted Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) back at the track later in the season. In 2021 The Rosebud runner-up In The Congo went on to win that year’s Golden Rose.
It also serves as a potential spring starting point for sprinters heading towards Flemington’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, and even the then $20 million The Everest (1500m) at Randwick in October.
The form of the 2021 The Rosebud was franked with the winner Paulele going on to run top three in a host of upcoming Group 1 events including the 2022 TJ Smith Stakes (3rd), 2022 Doomben 10,000 (2nd), and the 2022 Kingsford-Smith Cup (2nd).
