Peter Young Stakes 2026 Results

The official 2026 Peter Young Stakes results will be available below once the race takes place on Saturday, March 14, 2026.

  1. #5 Birdman
  2. #3 Apulia
  3. #4 Bankers Choice

Chris Waller’s progressive five-year-old import Birdman ($3.30) continued his outstanding prep securing his second Group 2 victory on the trot with a soft win in the 2026 Peter Young Stakes results. Having gone to another level this campaign, the Free Eagle gelding came via a lead-up Blamey Stakes win at HQ and was given a perfectly timed ride by Ben Melham. Having sat on pace, Birdman delivered when asked on the straight, moving up to the leader before hitting the front inside the final furlong and drawing away for an effortless 1.75 length win. He has now firmed in from $6 to $3 outright favouritism in the all-in Group 1 Australian Cup odds to take out the Group 1 on March 28.

Run over 1,800 metres in early March at Caulfield Racecourse, the Peter Young Stakes is a Group 2 event held during the coveted Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

Peter Young Stakes, Caulfield Racecourse

It was previously part of February’s Blue Diamond Stakes Day card before moving to its own feature meet in mid-March as of 2025 on the same day in Melbourne that Sydney hosts the Group 1 Coolmore Classic.

The weight-for-age staying race offers a lucrative $500,000 in prize money as of 2025.

The best out of the Peter Young Stakes often continue onto the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) and Fiorente (2014) was the last horse to complete the double.

Horses that perform well in the Peter Young Stakes over the autumn often return in the spring for a shot at the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November.

In 2022 Emissary ran third in the Peter Young before a brave second to Gold Trip in that year’s Melbourne Cup results. The 2022 Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip meanwhile resumed in the 2023 Peter Young Stakes running second to his stablemate Steinem.

Gold Trip returned in the 2023 Peter Young Stakes finishing third and was back in the spring winning the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes and running third in the Caulfield Cup. He also rounded out the Peter Young Stakes 2024 trifecta when third first-up behind classy Kiwi mare Campionessa.

In 2025 the Peter Young Stakes was won by Pride Of Jenni in her brilliant return to racing following a bleeding attack from the spring prior.

The 2025 Peter Young Stakes proved a genuine springboard for elite performers, with Pride Of Jenni using her win as a launchpad to dominate later in the year and claim the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes at Flemington. The race’s strength was underlined again by runner‑up Zardozi, who franked the form in the autumn by finishing third in the Australian Cup at her very next start, rounding out a high‑class trifecta and reinforcing the Peter Young as a serious form reference.
