Run in April at Ascot Racecourse in Perth, the Karrakatta Plate is a lucrative Group 2 race worth $500,000 in prize money.
The set weights sprint takes place over 1200m and is open only to two-year-old runners. It was previously held on the same day as Sydney’s ‘The Championships Day 1’ card before being moved to mid-April in 2023 to accompany the new $5 million slot-race – The Quokka.
Two-year-olds out of the Karrakatta Plate may opt to back-up in the Group 3 W.A. Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) and the last to complete the double were Whispering Brook (2016), Super Smink (2023), and Bustling (2024).
The 2022 Karrakatta Plate winning filly Amelia’s Jewel franked the form returning in the spring to complete the Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) – Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m) double in WA.
