Part of the Victorian Spring Racing Carnival, the Bendigo Cup had only been upgraded to a Group listing within the past few years but has already become a key country spring cup event offering $500,000 in prize money as of 2022.
Bendigo Cup | Neds.com.au
Contested on the Wednesday prior to Victoria Derby Day, the Bendigo Cup race takes place over 2400m and is held less than a week out from the iconic Melbourne Cup.

Potentially, the Bendigo Cup winner could continue onto a start in the ‘race that stops a nation’.

If a horse has done well in this race, they may also find themselves well placed to enter the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (VRC), Ballarat Cup or Zipping Classic over the remainder of the spring racing season.

The 2021 Bendigo Cup form was franked with the second placegetter Smokin’ Romans returning in the spring of 2022 to win the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) and the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) before starting the short-priced favourite in the Caulfield Cup.

The 2021 Bendigo Cup winner Wentwood meanwhile went on to finish 3rd in both the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) and Group 2 Sandown Classic (2400m) that spring.

The 2022 Bendigo Cup winner High Emocean franked the form with a third to stablemate Gold Trip in that year’s Melbourne Cup trifecta.

The stable went back-to-back in the 2023 Bendigo Cup results with the fellow Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Interpretation saluting for the punters.

David Eustace’s UK-based brother Harry Eustace won the 2024 Bendigo Cup with classy raider Sea King.

Maher celebrated his third Bendigo Cup victory with Sayedaty Sadaty in 2025.

Which Horse Will Win The Bendigo Cup in 2025

The best way to pick which will win the Bendigo Cup in 2025 is to take into account their lead-up form in the spring staying races and look at the weight they are allocated in the field.

  • Internationals – Entrants from other countries are quite common as the event serves as a Melbourne Cup lead-up race and the last overseas-trained horses to win were the Charlie Appleby-trained duo Francis Of Assisi (2016) and Qewy (2017) followed in 2024 by the Harry Eustace-trained UK galloper Sea King.
  • Coongy Lead-Up: Caulfield’s Group 3 Coongy Cup (2000m) run on Thousand Guineas Day serves as a nice lead-up into the Bendigo Cup field. Wentwood (2nd in 2021) was the last Bendigo Cup winner to come out of the Coongy Cup race.

Bendigo Cup 2025 Favourites

Favourites in 2025 Bendigo Cup betting include in form mare Quietness to be ridden by Jamie Melham from a wide barrier 13 draw, Chris Waller’s early market mover God’s Window up in grade, and Sayedaty Sadaty for Ciaron Maher who has prepared two of the past three Bendigo Cup winners.

Sertorius ($3.80 in 2013) followed by High Emocean ($2.30 in 2022) and Interpretation ($2.70 in 2023) are the latest Bendigo Cup favourites to win.
