Part of the Victorian Spring Racing Carnival, the Bendigo Cup had only been upgraded to a Group listing within the past few years but has already become a key country spring cup event offering $500,000 in prize money as of 2022.

Contested on the Wednesday prior to Victoria Derby Day, the Bendigo Cup race takes place over 2400m and is held less than a week out from the iconic Melbourne Cup.
Potentially, the Bendigo Cup winner could continue onto a start in the ‘race that stops a nation’.
If a horse has done well in this race, they may also find themselves well placed to enter the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (VRC), Ballarat Cup or Zipping Classic over the remainder of the spring racing season.
The 2021 Bendigo Cup form was franked with the second placegetter Smokin’ Romans returning in the spring of 2022 to win the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) and the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) before starting the short-priced favourite in the Caulfield Cup.
The 2021 Bendigo Cup winner Wentwood meanwhile went on to finish 3rd in both the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) and Group 2 Sandown Classic (2400m) that spring.
The 2022 Bendigo Cup winner High Emocean franked the form with a third to stablemate Gold Trip in that year’s Melbourne Cup trifecta.
The stable went back-to-back in the 2023 Bendigo Cup results with the fellow Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Interpretation saluting for the punters.
David Eustace’s UK-based brother Harry Eustace won the 2024 Bendigo Cup with classy raider Sea King.
Maher celebrated his third Bendigo Cup victory with Sayedaty Sadaty in 2025.
