We have Moonee Valley Gold Cup tips and predictions for the Group 2 2500m race at Flemington on Saturday.
Moonee Valley Gold Cup odds have numerous runners well-backed to win, and there is excellent value available.
AETHELWULF (15) is our top pick with Moonee Valley Gold Cup predictions after putting together an impressive run of results this preparation.
The Matthew Smith-trained stayer has won four of his past five starts before finishing second last time out behind Juja Kibo, and he could turn that result around in his favour at Flemington.
He showed plenty of determination to finish runner-up over 2400m in The Metropolitan. He didn’t get the best run in transit, and if he can find some cover, that will go a long way to winning over 2500m.
There isn’t much covering the first five in the market, so we’re taking the each-way odds for him. The winner earns a ballot exemption into the Melbourne Cup and usually firms in Melbourne Cup odds straight after the race. We would have been happy to take around $4.50, as he’s a stayer on the rise.

KING PEDRO (1) is a solid bet for the Moonee Valley Gold Cup, with the John O’Shea and Tom Charlton-trained gelding bringing an encouraging first-up effort into the staying test.
He finished fourth at his latest start over 1900m, running on well behind Attrition. That performance suggested he was looking for a longer trip, and the step up to 2500m should suit a horse who has shown the ability to finish strongly.
Damian Lane takes the ride from barrier 1, which is a significant advantage. The inside draw should allow him to save ground throughout the race, which pays off over the concluding stages.
At the current $6.50 odds, he has been well-backed to win. That’s a good sign, and he is unlikely to go under the radar on race day.

AUTUMN MYSTERY (5) looks an intriguing long-shot in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup, with the Rory Hunter-trained gelding getting another opportunity to show what he can do over the 2500m staying trip.
His recent form has been patchy, but he has been competing against quality opposition and gets into this race carrying just 55.5kg. That lighter weight could become an advantage late, particularly if the leading chances do too much work in the run.
Teo Nugent takes the ride from barrier 5, so he’ll get a good run in transit, and we’re happy to give him another chance at long odds. Our Moonee Valley Gold Cup tips include him to boost payouts in a big way.
