Apulia ($2.50F) delivered a powerhouse performance to claim victory for the punters in the 2025 Ted Van Heemst Stakes results at Ascot on Saturday, producing a stunning last-to-first victory that stamped him as the horse to beat heading into the 2026 Perth Cup.
After settling dead last in the field of 11, jockey William Pike swung the Ben, Will and JD Hayes trained gelding to the outside and let him rip. Apulia unleashed a booming finish, mowing down Hoba West in the final strides to score impressively.
Pike admitted the race didn’t unfold as planned — he’d hoped to be much closer in the run — but Apulia’s turn of foot made the tactical mishap irrelevant.
The win now has him firmly on track for the $1 million Perth Cup (2400m) on New Year’s Day, where he is expected to start one of the major players.
Run over 2,100 metres, the Ted Van Heemst Stakes is a Group 2 race taking place at Ascot Racecourse in late December as part of the popular Perth Summer Racing Carnival.
Following on from the festival’s three Group 1 feature races, the Ted Van Heemst Stakes (formerly run as the C.B. Cox Stakes), offers $300,000 and is a key lead up into the Perth Cup.
