We have Newcastle Gold Cup tips and predictions for the Group 3 2300m staying race at Newcastle on Friday.
Newcastle Gold Cup odds are available, and there is one runner heavily backed to win the time-honoured race.
Our Newcastle Gold Cup predictions are keen to back Aethelwulf, despite the skinny odds. It’s about the shortest odds you’ll see for the Newcastle Gold Cup, but he’s an elite stayer in the making.
We thought the 4YO gelding could be a potential Melbourne Cup runner next season, and although he’s unlikely to make the field this year, he’s only going to improve with more racing under his belt.
The son of Saxon Warrior has four wins from six starts overall, including three quality wins in a row. The form behind him has since been good, including Anthracite winning during the week.
We don’t see him having any troubles getting past this field, which makes the $1.55 palatable. There will be a lot of multis running through him on Friday, and he’s an anchor bet.
| 6. Aethelwulf (5) J: Zac Lloyd 54kg 15111 T: Matthew Smith | |||
| Recent form sound. Most recently favourite; raced right near the speed and boxed on; won by 2.25 len in a Bm78 at Rosehill on August 29 over 2000m defeating Anthracite carrying 58kg at $1.35. The run before that favourite; tracked the speed and boxed on steadily; won by 5 len in a Bm72 at Canterbury on August 5 over 1900m defeating Forbidden Riff carrying 58kg at $1.26. Exciting gelding who looks ready for this tough assignment. | |||
We might have Aethelwulf as our best bet of the day, but don’t sleep on So You Are, who scored an impressive win at Randwick last start.
The Bjorn Baker-trained gelding put away a tidy field by just under two lengths, and he travelled into the race stylishly from about the 600m mark. That was a good win, and he’s tougher than most horses in this race.
His odds have fluctuated throughout the week, but he should remain around $3.40. It’s a fair price for the second favourite, and upsets can happen in this race, so our Newcastle Gold Cup tips aren’t leaving him out.
| 2. So You Are (3) J: Rachel King 55kg 32421 T: Bjorn Baker | |||
| Racing well recently. At the latest run won by 1.75 len in the LR City Tatt’s Club Cup at Randwick on September 5 over 2400m defeating Fernao with 57.5kg at $3. The start before that set the pace for much of the race 2nd of 8 in the G3 Premier’s Cup at Randwick on August 22 over 2000m, slow going 0.6 len behind Boniface with 53kg at $3.60. In career best form and hard to hold out in this vein of form. | |||
It’s rare for Chris Waller not to have an impact on these provincial cup races, and Elliptical could score an upset win at double-figure odds.
The 7YO son of Dundeel might only be a two-time winner, but he is always around the mark, and his third placing behind Matusalem at Wyong is a good guide for racing at Newcastle, as they are similar tracks.
He’ll get a sweet trip from barrier 2 with 54kg on his back, and Kerrin McEvoy has eight wins from his last 50 rides, so he’s seeing the race well, and he could make the difference.
| 5. Elliptical (2) J: Kerrin Mcevoy 54kg 95453 T: Chris Waller | |||
| Most recently held ground to the line 3rd of 7 in the LR Wyong Gold Cup on September 4 over 2100m, 0.5 len behind Matusalem with 54kg at $9. Before that 5th of 8 in the G3 Premier’s Cup at Randwick on August 22 over 2000m, slow going 2 len behind Boniface carrying 53kg at $10. Holding form and can feature with the right run. | |||
Punters get value odds with our Newcastle Gold Cup SRM, which includes our three selected runners.
We have Aethelwulf To Win, So You Are Top 2, and Elliptical Top 4, which pays $4.60 for our three-runner SRM.
We’re going with the mantra that small fish are sweet with our SRM multi for the Newcastle Gold Cup. Aethelwulf isn’t paying big odds, so it’s tough to get a lot of value, and we have the favourite and So You Are running the quinella without a threat from much else.
Elliptical pays $1.45 for a Top 4 finish, which gives the odds a bit of a boost.
