Season Review
Highlights: Hope was restored at Redfern with CEO Blake Solly pulling off a coup and signing Wayne Bennett for 2025.
A five-game win streak during the middle of the season led to some flighting finals aspirations.
Latrell Mitchell was very good after his silly suspension and youngster Jye Gray was blooded nicely.
Lowlights: Very little went right for South Sydney all season and injuries were the main concern.
Campbell Graham didn’t play, plus stars Latrell Mitchell, Jai Arrow, Tevita Tatola, Alex Johnston and Cameron Murray, along with other starters Tyrone Munro and Lachlan Ilias, all missed 10 or more games.
Head coach Jason Demetriou was sacked after a horrid 54-20 loss to the Storm in Round 8.
Souths won just one of their opening 10 games and never got outside the bottom four.
The discipline of star Latrell Mitchell was again brought into question and Alex Johnston’s pursuit of Ken Irvine’s all-time tryscoring record was stymied.
What Worked: Shifting Keaon Koloamatangi from an edge to the middle reaped plenty of rewards and should see him shifted to prop forward next year.
There were some promising efforts from rookies including livewire Jye Gray and outside back Fletcher Myers.
What Didn’t: South Sydney played without a halfback for much of the season with Lachlan Ilias, Dean Hawkins and Dion Teaupa all struggling at the position – with the resistance to run a Walker/Wighton combination nothing but bloody minded idiocy.
Souths were an extremely poor disciplined team that showed itself as being the fourth most penalised team.
Goalkicking was a debacle for the Rabbitohs all season with seven kickers (as well as two farewell kickers) used.
Souths could not generate attack with ball in hand ranking bottom four in line breaks and line break assists.
