Sneak Peek: Super Bowl LVII Commericals

Sneak Peek: Super Bowl LVII Commericals

While Australian audiences are subjected to the same five ads on ESPN (Shaver Shop, Wayne Gretzky NHL, Hungry Jacks, Pain Away, and of course an advertisement for this fine company which is an ad this author could watch on a 24/7 loop and never get sick of) and the daytime TV/constant promos for Australian Idol on Channel 7, over in the States the commercials during the Super Bowl is as big as the game itself.

Super Bowl commercials are famous for huge celebrity cameos, high production values, and humor and many have gone into infamy such as the Apple Macintosh launch in 1984 or the “Whazzup” ad for Budweiser entering the US and therefore, world vernacular.

For a lazy 30-second spot during the FOX network broadcast, it costs around $ 7 million USD (approx. $10.89 million AUD), and naturally, the big players tend to take full advantage of the ad slot that will reach around 100 million viewers.

The like of Netflix, Google, and Uber take part along with the usual suspects Doritos, GMH, Budweiser, and Pepsi all booking their slots.

It’s worth nothing that for obvious reasons, unlike last year’s Super Bowl, the commercials for Crypto are few and far between.

We’ve gone down the YouTube rabbit hole to bring you just some of the ads that will go to air including Alicia Silverstone resuming her role as Cher from Clueless, Brian Cranston bringing back Walter White, Serena Williams and Brian Cox (Logan Roy) doing a Caddyshack tribue and one hit wonders such as Hadaway and Yvis singing a jingle for Uber just to name a few.

If you want the full Super Bowl viewing experience in Australia, sign up or find someone with an NFL GameZone subscription which will be broadcasting the entire Fox Network broadcast including the commercials!

Squarespace with Adam Driver

Going full Duplicity style, previews of this commercial for website maker Squarespace has already broken the internet.

The ad is based on Driver being confused that there is a website for making websites in what is an epic production.

Booking.Com with Mellisa McCarthy

It’s a pretty simple one from the good people at booking.com, actress Melissa McCarthy wants to book a nice holiday for her family and uses said website.

Bud Light with Miles and Keleigh Teller

One of the breakout stars of Top Gun: Maverick Miles Teller and his wife Keleigh dance to that on-hold music which seems to be worldwide.

You’ll know the exact tune once you press play on this clip.

Rakuten – Alicia Silverstone

Ugh, as if

Alicia Silverstone is back as Cher in the iconic 1995 movie – Clueless.

Truly one of the great films and it looks like not a day has gone by with her in that yellow plaid outfit.

Silverstone was recently asked what it was like to be Cher again, telling Entertainment Weekly “I think most of us would agree that ‘Cher’ is one of film history’s most iconic shoppers, so when Rakuten approached me to reprise the role for their Super Bowl spot, I thought it was a great idea. Cher was always figuring out how to get what she wanted in the most clever ways, so I think Rakuten would really appeal to her – getting cash back for doing her favorite activity. I imagine her running to her dad to boast about how much she saved and declaring ‘as If’ when asked if she ever shopped without using Rakuten.”

Pop Corners – Breaking Bad

Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul are back as Walter White and while this commercial might sell a few extra packs of Pop Corners, no doubt people will resume watching Breaking Bad all over again.

Avocados from Mexico: Anna Faris

Anna Faris plays eve in the garden of Eden and all of a sudden the world is naked forever. Makes sense.

Pepsi Zero – Steve Martin and Ben Stiller

While these ads with two Hollywood comedy legends are great, it’s worth noting that our American friends refer to Pepsi Max as Pepsi Zero.

Perhaps the idea that a product called Max with no sugar doesn’t compute with the Yanks?

Marketing logic can be strange sometimes.

Hellmanns – Jon Hamm, Brie Larson and Pete Davidson

So Hamm and Brie are in the fridge and Pete Davidson wants to eat them.

Watch the ad and it explains itself.

M&M’s with Maya Rudolph

M&M’s have had quite the stir-up in recent times with the chocolate shell candies being the centre point of the culture wars.

Now they’ve made Maya Rudolph their spokesperson and to be honest, I don’t get it.

Either way, it’ll probably stir up the usual sorts.

Experian with John Cena

For some reason, John Cena is on a studio lot singing about how happy he is to have paid his rent.

This clearly won’t resonate with Australian audiences given the current rental crisis and landlords tending to jack up the prices at short notice.

Michelob Ultra with Serena Williams, Brian Cox, Tony Romo, Alex Morgan, Nneka Ogwumike and Canelo Alvarez

An all-star cast promotes a light beer set at the fictional Bushwood Country Club – famous for being the location for one of the greatest movies of all time: Caddyshack.

Planters with Jeff Ross, Natasha Leggero, Atsuko Okatsuka, Frank Castillo, Yamaneika Saunders, David Lucas and Sarah Tiana

In a celebration of the good old-fashioned celebrity roast, the usual comedians roast the Planters Peanut mascot.

It’s a clever ad, but it really highlights the absence of the late, great Gilbert Godfried (RIP)

Pringles: Megan Trainor

This ad makes it ok to have your hand stuck in a Pringles tube, even for Megan Trainor.

Workday with Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol, Joan Jett, Gary Clark Jr., and Paul Stanley

This ad for accounting software is quite a good one, where actual rockstars put corporate rockstars in their place.

Good areas this.

Uber One with P. Diddy, Montell Jordan, Kelis, Donna Lewis, Haddaway and Ylvis

This is truly a great ad.

P Diddy signs up a bunch of classic one hit wonders to sing a jingle for the Uber One service.

Some outstanding artists lend a hand and it’s especially great to see Ylvis of What does the Fox Say fame get back in the spotlight.

I really hope the boys have a new album in the works.

Google Pixel with Amy Schumer, Doja Cat and Giannis Antetokounmpo

The trio flogs the fact the Google Pixel phone has the magic eraser feature.

That’s all well and good, but do they really want a life as a green text message?

Just sayin’

General Motors and Netflix with Will Ferrell

Will Ferrel drives a GM electric car around various Netflix shows pointing that EV’s will now be the norm on all future programs.

You don’t see him driving a Holden though do you?

Downy Unstopables with Danny McBride

Danny McBride stars as “Downy McBride” promoting a laundry detergent with hilarious results.

Doritos with Jack Harlow, Missy Elliott, and Elton John

This is legit one of my favorites from this year’s Super Bowl batch as Harlow decides to call it quits in rap and start playing the triangle instead.

Budweiser with Kevin Bacon

Six degrees of Kevin Bacon brings the entertainment business together with a six-pack of Budweiser.

Beautiful stuff.

Ken Bruce has Gone Completely Mad

Ok, it’s not running in the Super Bowl and this ad for Melbourne discount electronics store Ken Bruce hasn’t run for the good part of 25-years, but you’ve scrolled down this far.

Just imagine if someone spent $7million USD on an ad like this.

How would the yanks respond?

Did this ad ever air during an Australian broadcast of the Super Bowl?

They don’t make ’em like this anymore.
