The European football season comes to a close this weekend when Liverpool meets Real Madrid in the 2022 UEFA Champions League Final.
This will be the 2nd time these clubs have faced off for Europe’s most coveted trophy, with Real bettering the Reds 3-1 in the 2018 UCL Final, Gareth Bale was the hero on that occasion, scoring one of, if not the greatest goal in the history of the competition.
Since that defeat, the Reds returned to the final in 2019, claiming a comfortable 2-0 victory over Tottenham, in turn securing their 6th UCL title, only Milan (7) and Real Madrid (13) can lay claim to more.
Ths right, Real are the undisputed Kings of UEFA, the Spanish club has been to the final on 16 occasions, winning an astonishing 13 times, 4 of which came across the last 8 seasons.
In fact, Real Madrid’s last defeat in the Champions League final was in France way back in 1981, their opponents that night… Liverpool!
Real Madrid has already seen off two English clubs in this campaign, squeezing past Chelsea and Manchester City while overturning a first-leg defeat against PSG in the round of 16.
Meanwhile, Liverpool was dealt a far more favourable hand on their journey to the Final, easily overcoming Inter Milan, Benfica, and Villarreal.
Real’s success in this campaign can largely be attributed to the scoring exploits of Karim Benzema, the Frenchman has bagged 15 goals in the comp, 10 of which have come during the knockout phase, including an impressive pair of hattricks.
Both sides have enjoyed an incredible season to date, Real claimed the La Liga title, finishing 13 points ahead of arch-rivals Barca, while Liverpool fell a point shy of the EPL crown, but still managed to clinch two domestic Cups.
This has been labeled as the “Revenge Match” for Liverpool, with several players including Mo Salah publically stating that they’re still mulling over their defeat to Real in 2018.
The fact that the Los Blancos hold real estate in the Reds’ head plays into their hands, the likes of Benzema, Modric, Kroos, Casemiro, and co are all trialed and proven in massive games for both club and country, a mental edge which should set them up for success.
Real has won four of their last five Champions League fixtures against the Reds (1D), outscoring the scousers 10-2 across the trip, four of which were scored by Benzema!
The UCL Final is built for Galácticos, as such, I’m backing Real Madrid to add to their already jam-packed trophy cabinet with their 14th European Crown!
