2021 Champions League Round of 16 Preview

2021 Champions League Round of 16 Preview

Second Leg Fixtures

The European action continues, as four intriguing fixtures are set to take place across Wednesday and Thursday morning (AEST).

Can Atalanta overturn a one goal deficit against the Galacticos?

Will City secure their fourth consecutive UCL quarterfinal appearance?

Does Tuchel’s dream start with the Blues continue?

And how many goals does Bayern put past Lazio?

Our in-house Champions League Clairvoyant has previewed all four fixtures and provided his best betting plays below!

JUVENTUS VS FC PORTO
Cristiano Ronaldo to Outscore Porto $2.70

1st Leg Result: 1-2

Juve are no strangers to heading into a second with a deficit, the Italians have delivered under pressure time and time again, progressing through to the last four UCL quarterfinals despite failing to win a first leg across the trip.

This tie is set up for Ronaldo to shine, the Portuguese superstar has netted five goals in Juve’s previous two round of 16 second legs and rarely misses out in consecutive UCL ties.

I’m backing the Champions League’s most decorated player to single handily drag his teammates through to the quarterfinals.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND VS SEVILLA
Borussia Dortmund $2.25

1st Leg Result: 3-2

Sevilla fly to Dortmund looking to turn around a one goal deficit after Erling Haaland ran riot in the reverse fixture!

The Norwegian youngster has now scored 18 goals in 13 UCL appearances and looks like finding the back of the net every time he steps foot on the pitch!

Following their first leg defeat, Sevilla has gone on to lose three of their four domestic fixtures, managing to score just two goals across the trip.

Dortmund are playing with confidence at the moment and should thrive in a contest where the onus of scoring is on their opponent.

LIVERPOOL VS RB LEIPZIG
RB Leipzig $2.80

1st Leg Result: 2-0

Much to their fans’ delight, Liverpool will play their home fixture against RB Leipzig at the neutral venue of Puskás Aréna in Budapest.

The Reds domestic form has been nothing short of horrific!

Klopp’s side has mentally imploded, losing six straight at Anfield, a feat never before seen!

More concerningly, the current champs are yet to score a home goal in open play this year, leaving them floundering back in 8th position on the PL table.

Liverpool managed to snag the opening fixture against the run of play, I don’t think they will be so fortunate this time around.

PSG VS BARCELONA
Kylian Mbappe to Score and Over 2.5 Goals $2.40

1st Leg Result: 4-1

PSG head into a round of 16 second leg with a 3+ goal advantage for the second time in four years.

The last time they found themselves in this position, they famously choked against none other than FC Barcelona!

It’s safe to say that PSG’s young side has matured since that nightmare fixture, with Poch guiding his new side to eight wins from their last nine competitive fixtures, while conceding just four times across the trip.

Barcelona have found their feet in the La Liga, winning their last four fixtures to nil and pushing both Madrid sides in the title race.

Anything is possible with Leo Messi of the field, though since 2017 his supporting cast has diminished beyond belief.

I’m backing Mbappe to have his say in what will inevitably be a high octane contest in Paris.

REAL MADRID VS ATALANTA
Over 2.5 Goals $1.70

First Leg 1-0

Atalanta travel to the Spanish capital and attempt to turn around a one goal deficit in their tie against Real Madrid.

The Italian excitement machines carry decent domestic form into this contest, with six wins from their last seven contests, four of which saw over 3.5 goals scored.

The Galacticos are also starting to hit their straps, unbeaten in their last eight fixtures across all competitions.

One thing we can bank on in this contest is that the Italians are going to come out swinging, win, lose or draw we will bear witness to an exciting fixture.

MAN CITY VS BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH
Man City HT/FT $1.75

First Leg 2-0

Manchester City host Borussia Monchengladbach at the neutral location of Puskas Arena in Hungry.

Since succumbing to a 2-0 defeat against the Citizens in the first leg, Monchengladbach has returned to Germany and proceeded to get walloped in their ensuing four fixtures.

Alternatively, the Sky Blues have consolidated their position atop of the Premier League with four convincing victories across their last five outings.

The Borussia boys will most likely leave this contest with nothing other than a couple of new stamps in their passports.

CHELSEA VS ATLETICO MADRID
Chelsea $2.20

First Leg 1-0

Chelsea return to the Bridge with a one goal advantage following a stunning bicycle kick from puskas award winner, Olviier Giroud.

Since the first leg, both sides have gone on to win two and draw two of their next four domestic league fixtures.

Chelsea have been particularly impressive, recording five straight clean sheets, and ten across their last twelve matches since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel!

Under 2.5 goals looks an almost certainty at $1.60 in this fixture, though I’ll be backing the Blues to secure their fourth win from their last five outings at Stamford Bridge.

BAYERN MUNICH VS LAZIO
Bayern Munich and Over 3.5 Goals $2.45

First Leg 4-1

There hasn’t been a bigger foregone conclusion since Australia lined up against American Samoa in a 2002 World Cup qualifier.

While I’m not expecting Bayern to hit the back of the net 31 times here, I wouldn’t be surprised if they notched up double figures across both legs.

Fun and games aside, the current champs have scored 16 goals across their last four competitive matches, while Lazio have conceded 11 over the same trip.

I’m backing another goal-fest at Allianz Arena, with the Germans showing no mercy against their old allies.
