Mara was the inaugural Sandown Classic winner back in 1888.
Internationally-trained Zipping Classic winners in recent years include Beautiful Romance (2016), Au Revoir (2014) and Americain (2011) who had won the previous year’s Melbourne Cup.
The race’s now namesake, Zipping, is one of the most famous Sandown Classic winners in history taking out four straight editions of the event from 2007-2010.
Sound (2020-21) was the last back-to-back Zipping Classic winner.
The 2022 Zipping Classic winner Vow And Declare ($5) enjoyed his first victory since winning the 2019 Melbourne Cup.
The 2023 Zipping Classic winner was the in-form Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained grey Military Mission ($13) who improved on a Melbourne Cup 10th to come from right back before charging home for a 2.75 length win in the Group 2 at Caulfield.
The 2024 Zipping Classic winner was the Bjorn Baker-trained favourite Arapaho ($4.40) who franked the Champions Stakes form backing up from his fifth in that behind Via Sistina to salute for the punters and break a notable winning drought thanks to a gun ride by jockey Rachel King.
