Formerly known as the Warwick Stakes, the Winx Stakes was renamed in 2018 in honour of heroic mare and four-time Cox Plate hero Winx.

Winx is also the most famous winner of her namesake race. The three-time champion won in 2016 and 2017 when the event was known as the Warwick Stakes and also won the inaugural Winx Stakes in 2018.

Limerick (1927-29) was the first triple Warwick Stakes winner. Three-time Cox Plate champion Kingston Town also won three straight editions of the Warwick Stakes between 1980-82.

Jockey Darby Munro rode a record six Warwick Stakes winners to victory with Rogilla (1935), Allunga (1937), Beaulivre (1940), Katanga (1943), Removal (1945), and Tarien (1954).

Autumn Glow holds the current Winx Stakes record winning in 2026 in a time of 1 minute 21:03 seconds.

Plenty of outstanding thoroughbreds have won the Warwick / Winx Stakes including Chatham (1933-34), Tulloch (1957), Super Impose (1990-91), Sunline (1999), and the following year’s Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant (2020).

Trainer Chris Waller has trained 10 Winx Stakes winners most recently celebrating his 150th Group 1 success in 2023 with Fangirl who improved on her second behind the subsequently retired Anamoe the year before, while he won again in 2024 when Via Sistina led a stable trifecta before her 2025 title defence. Waller’s latest Winx Stakes winner was Autumn Glow (2026).

The 2024 Winx Stakes winner was the Chris Waller-trained imported Fastnet Rock mare Via Sistina ($11) who charged late first-up down the middle to beat Zougotcha (2nd) and Fangirl (3rd).

The 2025 Winx Stakes winner was the defending champion, eight-year-old Fastnet Rock mare Via Sistina ($2.80F) for now nine-time winning trainer Chris Waller with jockey James McDonald aboard on 57kg from barrier 1 to win by 0.36 lengths on a Heavy (10) track in a time of 1:26.02.

The 2026 Winx Stakes was won in a terrific first-up return by the odds-on favourite Autumn Glow ($1.75) for the event’s now 10-time winning trainer Chris Waller. The five-year-old The Autumn Sun mare made it 12 wins from 13 starts and four Group 1s when ridden to an impressive 1.39 length win by James McDonald on 57kg from barrier 3. She beat home fellow multiple Group 1 winning mare Sheza Alibi in a time of 1:21.03 on a Soft (5) track with Gringotts third.
