The Golden Eagle is one of the youngest and richest races on the Australian Racing Calendar, second only in prize money only to the $20 million The Everest as of 2022 having surpassed the stakes on offer in the iconic $10 million Melbourne Cup.
First added to the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival in 2019, The Golden Eagle now offers a massive $10 million prize purse and takes place on a huge day of racing in late October or early November at Randwick Racecourse (moved from Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in 2025).
The 2025 Golden Eagle is being run at Royal Randwick instead of its traditional home at Rosehill Gardens due to a strategic decision by Racing NSW to elevate the race’s profile within Sydney’s Spring Carnival.
The move aligns the $10 million race with other marquee events like The Everest, Spring Champion Stakes, and the Big Dance, creating a four-week blockbuster carnival at Randwick. Racing NSW cited the race’s growing international prestige—highlighted by eight of the top 12 finishers from 2024 going on to win Group 1 races globally—and its status as NSW’s second most-wagered race as key reasons for the relocation.
Part of the wider The Everest Racing Carnival, The Golden Eagle is a set weights race contested over 1500m and is open only to four-year-old horses.
It runs in Sydney on the Saturday prior to Victoria’s Melbourne Cup Day, the same date Melbourne hosts its time-honoured Victoria Derby Day program.
As well as The Golden Eagle race, the other Sydney features in New South Wales that day include the $3 million Russell Balding Stakes – formerly known as the Winners Stakes and renamed each year in honour of the previous season’s The Everest winner before 2024 – and the $750,000 Rosehill Gold Cup.
The race is part of the “Golden Slam” of races that begins for the two-year-olds with the $5 million Golden Slipper and continues for the three-year-olds with the $1 million Golden Rose. There’s an incredible $5 million bonus for any horse that manages to win all three races over their career.
The week of the 2022 edition the Golden Eagle field size was increased from 18 to 20 starters.
In 2023 Obamburumai from Japan became the first internationally-trained Golden Eagle winner.
A second international saluted in the 2024 The Golden Eagle results with the UK’s Lake Forest beating French raider Lazzat.

WHICH HORSE WILL WIN The Golden Eagle in 2025?
Which horse will win the 2025 Golden Eagle comes down to a number of key form factors including the barriers, form over the distance and their previous race experience against similar rivals.
When selecting The Golden Eagle winner it is also important to consider:
- Golden Horses: Looking out for any horses that performed well in the previous season’s Golden Rose is a good tip for The Golden Eagle.
- Group 1 Graduates: Horses coming off a spring Group 1 lead-up make the best bet in The Golden Eagle. In 2019 the inaugural The Golden Eagle winner Kolding came off a Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) victory. The following year, Colette (2020) improved on a lead-up Epsom Handicap sixth to win The Golden Eagle. In 2021 I’m Thunderstruck won Caulfield’s Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) before his Golden Eagle success, while in 2022 I Wish I Win improved on a 5th in the Toorak for his Golden Eagle success.
- Inside Alleys: The opening three The Golden Eagle winners jumped from single-digit barriers with Kolding (4 in 2019), Colette (6 in 2020) and I’m Thunderstruck (8 in 2021). I Wish I Win (10 in 2022) became the first champ to salute from wider than gate eight. Inside alleys were back in favour in 2023 with the Japanese-trained Obamburumai saluting from barrier 2 and then the UK’s Lake Forest from barrier 8 in 2024.
The Golden Eagle FAVOURITES 2025
The favourites in The Golden Eagle betting for 2025 at time of publish include Chris Waller’s currently undefeated daughter of The Autumn Sun Autumn Glow, last start Silver Eagle winner Linebacker, and Group 1 winning Japanese raider Panja Tower.
I’m Thunderstruck ($3.50 in 2021) is the latest and to date only The Golden Eagle favourite to win.
