The Spring Champion Stakes was first run in 1971 and Gay Icarus was the inaugural winner.
The 1979 Spring Champion Stakes winner Kingston Town would go on to make history saluting in a host of other Group 1 features over his illustrious career including his three victories in the Cox Plate (1980-82).
Another of the most famous Spring Champion Stakes winners was Nothin’ Leica Dane (1995) who went on to win that year’s Victoria Derby before finishing second in the Melbourne Cup as a three-year-old just three days later.

In 2004 Savabeel won the Spring Champion Stakes – Cox Plate double.
Yankee Rose (2016) was the first Spring Champion Stakes winning filly. Since then the other fillies to beat home the boys in the event are Maid Of Heaven (2018) and Montefilia (2020).
Other notable Spring Champion Stakes winners throughout history include Beau Zam (1987), Danewin (1994), Tie The Knot (1997), It’s A Dundeel (2012), and Shadow Hero (2019).
The 2022 Spring Champion Stakes winner was the New Zealand-trained Sharp ‘N’ Smart ($7) who came off a Gloaming Stakes victory and overcame a wide run throughout to score a gutsy victory on way to the VRC Derby in seven days’ time.
The 2023 Spring Champion Stakes winner was the James Cummings-trained favourite Tom Kitten ($2.50F) who bolted home for an impressive 3.68 length win for the punters.
The 2024 Spring Champion Stakes winner was Anthony Cummings’ last start Gloaming champ El Castello ($3F) who was excellent getting a dream run before charging home late to salute for the punters and post a fourth win on the trot while handing both Cummings and jockey Joshua Parr their third victories in the Group 1 showdown.
