Not to be confused with the Australian Turf Club Group 1 race of the same name, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (VRC) is a Group 3 event contested over 2,600m at Flemington Racecourse on the first Saturday of November annually.
The race has recently been run as the Queen’s Cup.
A key support act on the Champion Stakes Day program, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes makes a nice consolation race for stayers that failed to gain a start in the coveted Melbourne Cup race the Tuesday before.
A quality handicap event also known as the Queen’s Cup, the VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes also offers a bonus to any horse that was paid up for at final acceptances stage but was balloted out of the Melbourne Cup field. Irish-trained mare True Self (2019) was the last Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner to take out the bonus. She returned in 2020 and improved on a lead-up 13th in the Caulfield Cup to successfully defend her Queen Elizabeth Stakes title at Flemington.
Good lead-up races into the Queen Elizabeth Stakes include the Caulfield Cup and the Moonee Valley Gold Cup.
Horses that do well in this race often go on to enter the Zipping Classic at Sandown. In 2021 the Queen Elizabeth Stakes runner-up at Flemington, Sound, went on to win that year’s Zipping Sandown Classic.
The 2022 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (VRC) form was franked with the winner Soulcombe returning the following spring to run second to Without A Fight in the 2023 Melbourne Cup results.
The 2023 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (VRC) third placegetter Duke De Sessa franked the form the following spring with his 2024 Group 1 Caulfield Cup victory.

The 2024 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (VRC) takes place on Saturday the 9th of November 2024 as one of the key support acts on Flemington’s Stakes Day program. The other Group status races on the card include the:
