The Premiere Stakes is a Group 2 sprint held at Royal Randwick in either late September or early October as part of the bumper Epsom Handicap Day card.
The event offers $1 million prize money having had its stakes doubled ahead of the 2022 edition and is contested at weight-for-age.
Run and won since 1972, the Premiere Stakes now serves as a key lead-up into the $20 million The Everest race and in 2020 the Premiere Stakes runner-up Classique Legend went on to win that year’s edition of the world’s richest turf race.
In 2021 the Premiere Stakes winner Masked Crusader ran second to Nature Strip in that season’s The Everest results.
Think About It (2023) was the first horse to complete the Premiere Stakes – The Everest double.
Masked Crusader returned in the 2022 Premiere Stakes to run third behind the previous year’s fourth placegetter Lost And Running.
The 2022 Premiere Stakes runner-up Mazu meanwhile placed third in that spring’s The Everest trifecta before a $3 million Winners Stakes (now Russell Balding Stakes) second and 2023 TJ Smith Stakes third the following autumn.
The 2024 Premiere Stakes also produced that year’s The Everest winner with the mighty mare Bella Nipotina improving on her third in the Group 2 to win the first official Group 1 edition of The Everest at her next start. She further franked the form taking out that year’s $3 million Russell Balding Stakes (formerly the Winners Stakes) before a Group 1 Champions Sprint third at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
