Formerly known as the Research Stakes, the Golden Pendant is now a Group 2 event for fillies and mares held at Rosehill Gardens on Golden Rose Stakes Day in late October each spring.
Offering $400,000 in prize money the event is run at set weights plus penalties over 1400m and has been won by many quality mares over the years including More Joyous (2012) and Daysee Doom (2017).
The Golden Pendant now also serves as a potential lead-up for any four-year-old mares targeting the $10 million The Golden Eagle (1500m), which the 2019 Golden Pendant Mizzy went on to run third in for the inaugural edition, as well as the recently created $2 million The Invitation (1400m) held for the first time in 2021.
In 2021 the Golden Pendant winner Vangelic also went on to finish third in that year’s Golden Eagle trifecta.
In 2022 the Golden Pendant winner Nimalee went on to place third in that year’s The Invitation results.
Espiona (2023) is the latest mare to complete the Golden Pendant – The Invitation double.

The 2024 Golden Pendant winner was the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained four-year-old Snitzel mare Makarena ($4.60) who came off a lead-up Sheraco Stakes fourth to salute second-up after hitting the lead 250m out and holding off the challenge from Amelia’s Jewel to take out the Group 2 on Golden Rose Day.

Set weights plus penalties apply to this race.
No class restriction, Set Weights plus Penalties, Three-Years-Old and Upwards, Fillies and Mares
Base Weight: Mares 54kg, Fillies 53kg. Wins prior to the 1st August 2022 do not incur a penalty. Wins on or since 1st August 2022 are penalised as follows: 1) The winner of a group three race to carry an additional 1kg; of two or more such races 1.5kg; 2) The winner of a group two race to carry an additional 2kg; of two or more such races 2.5kg; 3) The winner of a group one race to carry an additional 4kg; of two or more such races 5kg. Penalties not to be cumulative. If a ballot is required it will be done on benchmark, if equal then by lot.
2024 Golden Pendant weights must be declared by Tuesday September 24, 2024 at 4:00pm (local time) with the final weights to be published in our above Golden Pendant Field section.
Nimalee (58kg in 2022) and Espiona (58kg in 2023) are the latest Golden Pendant topweights to win. Nimalee was the first Golden Pendant winner to carry more than 57kg to victory since More Joyous (59kg in 2012).
