Eclipse Stakes, Sandown Racecourse

Taking place on the last day of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival as part of Zipping Classic Race Day formerly held at Sandown Racecourse in mid to late November, the Eclipse Stakes is raced under a quality handicap at 1800 metres.

The event offers $200,000 in prize money and can serve as a nice final run for the middle-distance spring stayers.

In 2021 the Eclipse Stakes and Zipping Classic Day card was moved to late November at Caulfield Racecourse where it remained for the 2022 edition.

In 2023 the race took place on the first Saturday in December, while in 2024 it ran on the final Saturday in November.

Which Horse Will Win The Eclipse Stakes in 2024?

The best way to pick which horse will win the Eclipse Stakes in 2024 is to take into account their lead-up form in similar grade/distance races, any previous runs at the track and looking for proven Group performers.

Additional factors to consider when picking the Eclipse Stakes winner include:

  • Cup Day Lead-Up: Horses out of the Melbourne Cup Day Plate (1800m) at Flemington over the same distance are worth following into the Eclipse Stakes.
  • Top-Weights: From 2016-2024 five of the nine Eclipse Stakes winners carried 58kg or more to victory.

Eclipse Stakes 2024 Favourites

Favourites in Eclipse Stakes 2024 betting include Team Hayes’ consistent Fiorente stallion Apulia, progressive Savabeel gelding Poison Chalice, and the Ciaron Maher-trained New Energy coming off a sixth in the Group 1 Champions Mile.
