The Doncaster Mile is one of the premier Australian mile races, held at Royal Randwick Racecourse over 1600m on a Saturday in early April as part of Sydney’s lucrative ‘The Championships’ races.
A time-honoured handicap event, the race was formerly known as the Doncaster Handicap and has been run and won since 1866.
Many turf greats have won the Doncaster Mile including in recent history Super Impose (1990, 1991) who also won the Epsom Handicap in the spring twice, Sunline (1999, 2002), and the brilliant mare Winx (2016).
Popular cult horse Happy Clapper (2018) holds the current Doncaster Mile race record for his win in 1:33.17 and the legendary TJ Smith holds the trainers record having prepared seven champions.
The Doncaster Mile winner is exempt from ballot for the $5 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) the following weekend.
Mr Brightside coming off a lead-up win in the The All-Star Mile became the latest dual Doncaster Mile winner when successfully defending his title in 2023.

The 2025 Doncaster Mile takes place on Day 1 of ‘The Championships’ at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse on Saturday the 5th of April 2025. There are four Group 1 races in total held that day at the track with the Doncaster Mile supported by the:
