First contested in 1992 the W.W. Cockram Stakes, renamed the Courtza Stakes in 2026, is a Group 3 sprint race for mares held on Memsie Stakes Day in late August or early September each season.
The opening Group 1 race meeting of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival the day is headlined by the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) with the Cockram Stakes one of three Group 3 support acts on the Caulfield race card.
Offering $200,000 in prize money the Cockram Stakes has been run at both Caulfield and Sandown Racecourses over its history and is contested at set weights plus penalties.
Many of the mares in the Cockram Stakes field are kicking off their spring campaigns and the race may be the first official start for new-season four-year-olds.
Notable Cockram Stakes winners include Mid Summer Music (2011), Pippie (2019) who went on to win the following year’s Group 1 Oakleigh Plate – Moir Stakes double, Perfect Jewel (2020), and star New Zealand-trained mare Probabeel (2021) who went on to win her fourth Group 1 a few starts later in the Caulfield Stakes.
