Caulfield Racing Tips & Predictions

Caulfield shapes as a fascinating betting card on Saturday with plenty of depth across the nine-race meeting and rain expected to keep the track in the soft range. The true rail should ensure all runners get their chance, although proven wet-track performers and horses with tactical speed could prove difficult to run down. Several progressive gallopers are resuming or stepping into stronger company, making for an excellent afternoon of competitive racing.

Caulfield Race-by-Race Tips

Caulfield Race 1 – Sportsbet Feed Hcp – 1200m

Our pick: #11 – Monumentum – @$14.00

The unbeaten trial form has been hard to ignore, with the Blue Point filly winning both lead-up hit-outs in sharp style and doing it with something in hand. She draws nicely for her debut, gets a rider who knows her well, and the stable has a knack for producing forward juveniles at a price. Against a field with limited exposed form outside the favoured runners, she looks capable of making an immediate impact if the race tempo suits.

Caulfield Race 2 – Ian Miller (BM78) – 1200m

Our pick: #12 – Zunna – @$9.50

There’s still plenty of upside with this lightly raced mare, who resumed with a tough win at Pakenham after launching from back in the field. She’s now won three from six overall and looks capable of measuring up in Saturday grade with natural improvement second-up. Beau Mertens stays aboard, the soft conditions suit, and if the tempo is genuine, she’ll be charging late at a nice each-way price.

Caulfield Race 3 – Selangor Turf Club Hcp – 1400m

Our pick: #8 – Clevor Trever – @$5.00

There was a lot to like about the fresh Bendigo win where he sat up on speed and kicked strongly to score with authority in a handy Class 1. He’s now unbeaten in two starts this preparation, maps to get another economical run just behind the speed, and still looks to have upside compared to some more exposed rivals. Patrick Payne’s galloper has handled every challenge so far, and the rise into this grade doesn’t look beyond him.

Caulfield Race 4 – Rod Fenwick (BM78) – 1600m

Our pick: #1 – First Chorus – @$3.40

Forgive the last-start Flemington run where she overdid things early over 1800m before fading late. Her previous Caulfield effort was outstanding when narrowly beaten over this track and trip on a Soft 7, and that form stacks up strongly here. She maps to get a lovely run just behind the speed, handles wet ground, and Jamie Mott jumps back aboard after great success together. Back to 1600m looks ideal.

Caulfield Race 5 – Rod Griffiths (BM100) – 1600m

Our pick: #3 – Oh Too Good – @$6.00

Consistency has been the key to her campaign and she looks ready to cash in after back-to-back runner-up finishes in strong company. Her latest Flemington run was full of merit behind Wonder Boy, she’s already proven at the mile, and the drop to 57.5kg keeps her very competitive. With a soft run expected from the draw and race fitness on her side, she profiles as one of the safest options in the field.

Caulfield Race 6 – JRA (BM84) – 2000m

Our pick: #5 – Makdane – @$12.00

Freshened up off a strong first-up victory here over the mile, he now gets to a distance that looks much more suitable based on his previous staying form. The gelding has an outstanding record on soft ground, maps to enjoy a soft run from midfield, and Molly Bourke’s claim keeps the weight manageable despite the rise in grade. There’s still improvement to come second-up and his Caulfield profile is hard to knock.

Caulfield Race 7 – Coolmore & Ireland Funds Australia Hcp – 1100m

Our pick: #6 – High On The Hill – @$4.50

This colt still looks well ahead of the handicapper after only four career starts. His latest Morphettville win was full of merit, he handled soft ground comfortably, and his earlier placing behind quality opposition at Caulfield reads very well for this. The claim for Jabez Johnstone gets the weight down nicely and Ciaron Maher’s runners are hard to ignore in these developing three-year-old races. With further improvement likely third-up, he looks a genuine winning chance.

Caulfield Race 8 – Sportsbet Bel Esprit Stakes (L) – 1100m

Our pick: #14 – Bazaball Rewarded – @$7.00

She continues to improve with racing and her first-up win at Caulfield was impossible to ignore. The mare controlled the race on a Soft7 track and still had enough left to hold off Bustling late, making it five wins from her past six starts. Her record on rain-affected ground is excellent, she maps to get another perfect on-speed run, and the light weight gives her every chance to measure up again in Listed company.

Caulfield Race 9 – Darren Gauci (BM84) – 1200m

Our pick: #5 – Perspiration – @$5.50

There’s plenty to like about this Tasmanian sprinter returning here off back-to-back wins before the spell. He’s unbeaten at 1200m on soft tracks this campaign, maps for a cosy midfield run, and his recent trial work suggests he has returned in excellent order. The lightweight and strong strike rate at the distance make him a genuine value play in an open race where several of the favourites come through tougher but less convincing form lines.
