Callander-Presnell (Stan Fox Stakes)
Looking for this year’s Callander-Presnell betting odds, tips and field for the race formerly run as the Stan Fox Stakes? The experts at Neds have put together everything you need to know before this year’s race.
Run over 1600 metres having been increased in distance from 1500m in 2022, the Stan Fox Stakes is now known as the Callander-Presnell. The race was renamed in honour of Sydney racing media figures Ken Callander and Max Presnell and has replaced the now defunct the $1 million Bondi Stakes (1600m), an event that ran from 2019-21.
A Group 2 race taking place at Royal Randwick Racecourse in late October on Spring Champion Stakes Day, the Callander-Presnell prize money was boosted to $1 million in 2022. It attracts a quality line-up middle-distance three-year-olds that could be targeting a Group 1 race down in Melbourne over the Cup Carnival.
For it’s first 32 years it was run at 1400 metres, before being increased to 1500m in 2021 and 1600m in 2022.
Starting out as a Principal Race, it then progressed to a Listed race in 1985, followed by Group 3 in 1989. It has been a Group 2 race since 1996.
The event briefly served as a lead-up into the Bondi Stakes from 2019-2021 before replacing that event in 2022 as the leading Sydney spring race for three-year-olds.
Both Pelzer (2020) and Hilal (2021) completed the Stan Fox Stakes – Bondi Stakes double.
The new key lead-up into the Callander-Presnell field is the Follow $500,000 Tapp-Craig (1400m) held on Hill Stakes Day, and the first three place-getters in that are exempt from Callander-Presnell ballot.
In 2022 the Callander-Presnell was won by the favourite, that year’s Caulfield Guineas winner Golden Mile.

Which Horse Will Win The Callander-Presnell in 2024
The best way to pick which horse will win the Callander-Presnell (formerly the Stan Fox Stakes) is to take into account their lead-up spring racing form, assess the barriers, look at their lead-up form in similar grade races, and their Sydney strike-rate.
Additional factors to consider when picking the Callander-Presnell winner include:
- Golden Rose Lead-Up – The Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) run a earlier in the spring has proven the key Stan Fox Stakes (now the Callander-Presnell) lead-up in recent history. Press Statement (2015) was the last horse to do the Golden Rose – Stan Fox Stakes double, but a host of other Stan Fox Stakes winners have come off a Golden Rose lead-up most recently Peltzer (5th in 2020) and Hilal (11th in 2021).
- Top Stables – The bulk of the Stan Fox Stakes / Callander-Presnell winners have hailed from the top local Sydney trainers.
Callander-Presnell 2024 Favourites
2024 Callander-Presnell favourites include last start Tapp-Craig winner Anode from the Waterhouse/Bott stable, Justify colt Just Party coming via a second in the same key lead-up, and Deconstruction coming off a third in the Tapp-Craig looking potential value.
Peltzer ($2.70 in 2020) was the last Stan Fox Stakes favourite to win before the race name changed ahead of the 2022 edition when Golden Mile ($2.30) saluted for the punters as the Callander-Presnell favourite.
