The 2000m handicap race takes place at the end of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and attracts a quality line-up of staying types vying for the half-a-million-dollar prize purse each season.
The inaugural Ballarat Cup took place in 1939 and was won by Plymouth Hoe.
The Ballarat Cup serves as a nice lead-up to December’s Listed $300,000 Pakenham Cup (2500m) and Pilote D’Essai (2016) was the last to do the double.
Since then, plenty of nice types have won including the following year’s Sydney Cup champion The Offer (2013).
