7 Stakes
Looking for this year’s best 7 Stakes betting markets, tips and form? The experts at Neds have put together everything you need to know before this year’s race.
The 7 Stakes is the latest ‘pop-up’ race added to the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival line-up in 2023.
The $1 million event is an unlisted feature run at weight-for-age over the mile at Royal Randwick in mid-September.
It replaces the George Main Stakes as the 1600m feature on race card that is now headed by the Group 2 The Shorts for The Everest-bound sprinters.
The George Main Stakes was moved to mid-October to take place at Randwick on The Everest Day and renamed the Group 1 $5 million King Charles III Stakes (1600m) as of 2023.
The 7 Stakes offers the winner a ballot exemption into the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at the same track and trip a fortnight later and the 7 Stakes – Epsom Handicap double is now a popular spring punt.
Think It Over was the inaugural 7 Stakes winner in 2023.
In 2024 Fangirl improved on her third the year before to salute for the punters as the $1.75 favourite.

Which Horse Will Win The 7 stakes in 2024
The best way to pick which horse will win the 7 Stakes in 2024 is to take into account their lead-up spring racing form, assess the barriers, their record over the 1600m distance and any previous Group race experience against similar rivals.
Additional factors to consider when picking the 7 Stakes winner include:
- Local Edge – Sydney horses, especially those with plenty of Randwick Racecourse experience, could have the advantage in the 7 Stakes race.
- Group 1 Runners – Proven Group 1 winners at weight-for-age are set to dominate the 7 Stakes race.
- Winx Stakes Lead-Up: The Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) run the month before looks the key 7 Stakes lead-up race. Think It Over won the inaugural 7 Stakes in 2023 on the back of a Winx Stakes 3rd. Fangirl (3rd in 2024) was the last Winx Stakes graduate to win the 7 Stakes.
7 stakes Favourites 2024
Current 7 Stakes 2024 favourites include Chris Waller’s multiple Group 1 winning mare Fangirl who ran third in the race last year, her also Group 1 winning stablemate Zougotcha coming off a first-up second in the Winx Stakes, and the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained European import Royal Patronage coming off a Group 2 Tramway Stakes win on debut down under.
The first 7 Stakes favourite was Zaaki ($3) who finished runner-up narrowly beaten by Think It Over ($5 in 2023).
Fangirl ($1.75 in 2024) was the first favourite in 7 Stakes betting to win.
