Eagle Farm Race-by-Race Tips

Eagle Farm Race 1 – The Wayne Wilson (L) – 1600m

Our pick: #2 – Yellow Jersey – @$2.50

A fascinating European import resumes for his Australian debut and the profile is hard to ignore. Yellow Jersey won three of his first four starts before finishing a close third at Group 2 level in France, and he arrives off a stylish Sunshine Coast trial victory. Soft ground holds no fears and the McEvoy stable has placed him attractively to kick off this campaign. If he reproduces anything close to his overseas form, he looks capable of making an immediate impact.

Eagle Farm Race 2 – Ticketmaster Oxlade Stakes (L) – 1200m

Our pick: #1 – Marffiano – @$4.60

There was plenty to like about Marffiano’s effort in the rich Magic Millions National 2YO Classic when he closed off strongly after an ordinary start. The Bendigo Gold Rush winner showed quality on debut and the extra 200m looks ideal after finding the 1000m a touch sharp last time. Mark Zahra retains the ride and a cleaner getaway should see him settle closer to the action. With only two starts under his belt, he’s open to significant improvement and shapes as a major player.

Eagle Farm Race 3 – XXXX Brisbane Cup (G2) – 3200m

Our pick: #9 – Thebudgiesmugla – @$5.00

Progressive stayers often measure up in this race and Thebudgiesmugla fits that profile perfectly. The lightly raced gelding has won five of his 11 starts and was far from disgraced when sixth in the Listed Mayors Cup after stepping back to 2000m. Prior to that he scored over 2400m at Randwick and now gets back out to a more suitable staying trip. Carrying only 53kg and still on the up, he looks capable of taking another step forward in this company.

Eagle Farm Race 4 – Sky Racing Gunsynd Classic (G3) – 1600m

Our pick: #1 – Sixties – @$2.45

Class often rises to the top in races like this and Sixties boasts some of the strongest form in the field. A winner of the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes and placed in Group 1 company earlier this campaign, he resumed with a strong closing fifth in the Fred Best after a freshen-up. James McDonald takes the reins and the extra distance looks suitable second-up. If he reproduces his best form, he is capable of returning to the winner’s stall.

Eagle Farm Race 5 – Seven Hinkler Hcp (L) – 1200m

Our pick: #4 – Pereille – @$7.00

Few runners boast a more consistent record at this level than Pereille, who again showed his customary finishing burst when third in the Chief De Beers at Doomben. Third-up fitness is a positive, James McDonald jumps aboard and the gelding has already proven effective over this course and distance. If the tempo is genuine, he should be charging late and can finally convert one of these feature-race placings into a win.

Eagle Farm Race 6 – Magic Millions Dane Ripper Stakes (G2) – 1300m

Our pick: #8 – She’s Got Pizzazz – @$6.50

Few runners enter this contest in better recent form than She’s Got Pizzazz. The Moody and Coleman-trained mare followed her Listed Silk Stocking victory with a flashing second in the Helen Coughlan Stakes, storming home from the tail of the field to miss by only a long neck. Mark Zahra retains the ride and the step up to 1300m looks ideal. With even luck from midfield, she has the class and momentum to make her presence felt again.

Eagle Farm Race 7 – Trackside NZ J.J. Atkins (G1) – 1600m

Our pick: #4 – Tron Bolt – @$2.20

Progressive types often make their mark in this race and Tron Bolt arrives chasing a hat-trick after dominant victories at Randwick Kensington and Rosehill. The Chris Waller-trained colt was powerful through the line over 1300m last start and gives every indication that the rise to 1600m will be within reach. James McDonald takes the reins and his unbeaten metropolitan record makes him a major player despite the jump in grade.

Eagle Farm Race 8 – Ladbrokes Stradbroke Handicap (G1) – 1400m

Our pick: #7 – Headley Grange – @$5.50

A breakthrough Group 1 victory in the Kingsford Smith Cup confirmed Headley Grange has developed into a genuine top-level performer. He charged late to score over 1300m here last start and now drops to 55kg, which looks highly advantageous given the quality of his recent form. Proven on soft ground and capable at 1400m, the Joseph Pride-trained gelding shapes as one of the hardest runners to hold out again.

Eagle Farm Race 9 – HKJC World Pool Q22 (G2) – 2200m

Our pick: #10 – Pride Of Jenni – @$5.50

Few horses are as brave as Pride Of Jenni and she nearly pinched another Group 1 when runner-up in the Doomben Cup after doing all the work in front. While 2200m is new territory, her dominant front-running style can break the spirit of rivals if left alone. Ciaron Maher has never been afraid to test her limits and another bold display would come as no surprise.
