The most famous Chipping Norton Stakes winner in recent history was four-time hero Winx (2016-19), the mighty mare best known for her historic four peat in Melbourne’s Cox Plate.
The 2022 Chipping Norton Stakes winner Verry Elleegant – winner of the 2021 Melbourne Cup – enjoyed a successful title defence having also won in 2021 and handed trainer Chris Waller an historic 10th win in the event.
Verry Elleegant is now the race’s namesake with the Chipping Norton Stakes known from 2024 onwards as the Verry Elleegant Stakes.
The Chipping Norton Stakes 2023 winner was the odds-on favourite Anamoe ($1.60) for trainer James Cummings who backed-up from a win in the Apollo Stakes. Anamoe became the third straight Chipping Norton Stakes winner ridden to victory by jockey James McDonald who had won the event in both 2021 and 2022 aboard Verry Elleegant.
The first official Verry Elleegant Stakes winner in 2024 was Think It Over ($8.50). Kerry Parker’s gun eight-year-old was huge saving ground on the fence to hit the front on the home straight and charge home holding off the odds-on favourite Fangirl in a notable upset in the race formerly known as the Chipping Norton Stakes.
The 2025 Verry Elleegant Stakes winner was Chris Waller’s Cox Plate champion mare Via Sistina ($1.60) who handed her trainer his 11th win in the event when saluting for the punters to defeat her stablemates Fangirl (2nd) and Lindermann (3rd).
The 2026 Verry Elleegant Stakes winner four-year-old The Autumn Sun mare Autumn Glow ($1.26F) for her 10th win from as many starts with the undefeated champion securing her first Group 1 success as the odds-on favourite for the race’s now 12-time winning trainer Chris Waller with jockey James McDonald aboard on 57kg from barrier 3 to salute by 0.4 lengths on a Soft (5) track in a time of 1:35.55.
