Doomben Tips & Preview – Saturday, August 22

Doomben Tips & Preview – Saturday, August 22

Doomben betting tips are ready for a 10-race card this Saturday.

The track is rated a Soft 5, with fine weather forecast. The rail is out 2m, so the early races should help shape the betting approach.

Punters will want to watch how the track conditions play. Runners that can hold a position around the bends may get an advantage.

The speed map is important across the card. Our race analysis works through the key runners, main winning chances and best betting opportunities.

Let’s get into the Doomben plays.

Race 1 – BECOME A BRC MEMBER QTIS Three-Year-Old & Four-Year-Old BENCHMARK 68 Handicap (1600 METRES)
No. 1 Wrigley Field

WRIGLEY FIELD (1) gets the distance and class setup he has been waiting for.

The Jack Bruce-trained gelding rises to a mile after finishing fourth, beaten 1.25 lengths, over 1400m at Eagle Farm.

He came from well off the lead and worked home strongly in a stronger race. The weight rises, but the class drop should offset that.

Ryan Maloney takes the ride, and the inside draw gives him the chance to settle closer with speed drawn wide.

Doomben R1 – Become A Brc Member 3&4yo (Bm68) Hcp
Open Race time:
1. Wrigley Field (1)
J: Ryan Maloney 60kg
4×254T: Jack Bruce
Dual acceptor. At the latest run 4th of 13 in a Nmw at Eagle Farm on August 8 over 1400m, 1.3 len behind Gambino with 53kg at $4.80. Before that eased back early on 5th of 9 in a Cl4 at Gold Coast on July 25 over 1400m, slow going 1.0 len behind Enforceable carrying 57.5kg at $7. Honest galloper who is clearly the testing material.

Race 2 – RACECOURSE VILLAGE No Metro Wins Handicap (1200 METRES)
No. 9 Shelstein

SHELSTEIN (9) has plenty going for him back at his preferred distance.

The Annabel & Rob Archibald-trained gelding gave a good sight over 1350m here last start, only being run down late to finish second, beaten three-quarters of a length.

He is third-up now and drops back to 1200m, with all of his wins coming over this trip.

The 54kg is a big positive, and Daniel Moor should get the right run just behind what looks like a genuine tempo.

Doomben R2 – Racecourse Village (Rs0mw) Hcp
Open Race time:
9. Shelstein (4)
J: Daniel Moor 54kg
22×62T: Annabel & Rob Archibald
Dual acceptor. Third-up today and placed third-up in the past. First-up 6th of 11 in a Bm70 at Eagle Farm on July 15 over 1200m, 2.5 len behind Fragile Love with 57.5kg at $4.60. Second run from a spell sat on the speed and boxed on steadily 2nd of 11 in a Cl3 at this track on August 5 over 1350m, 0.7 len behind Land Bank carrying 59kg at $7.50. Best figures stack up favourably.

Race 3 – SKY RACING BENCHMARK 72 Handicap (1350 METRES)
No. 1 Blazing Harry

BLAZING HARRY (1) gets a chance to break free from Braveheart’s shadow.

The Kristy Clark-Peoples-trained gelding has chased Tony Gollan’s star twice recently, including a strong second over 1200m when resuming.

He again finished behind Braveheart last start but still closed off well to run second, beaten 3.41 lengths.

The quick back-up and rise to 1350m should suit, and Bella Youngberry’s 3kg claim helps. From the draw, she can have him stalking the speed.

Open Race time:

J: Bella Youngberry 59kg

Before that made ground from midfield; 2nd of 10 in a Cg&E Cl3-Sw at this track on August 1 over 1200m, nose behind Braveheart carrying 60kg at $15. Great chance to go one better on the seven-day turnaround.

Race 4 – THE GIBSON BENCHMARK 80 Handicap (2200 METRES)
No. 5 Chillaxing
Each Way

CHILLAXING (5) is hard to ignore at the $9 available at the time of publication.

The Tony Gollan-trained gelding was tough over 2400m at Eagle Farm last start, getting the better of several rivals he meets again.

He has already won twice at Doomben, including a gritty victory over 2000m three starts ago.

The wide barrier is the concern, but Daniel Moor should be able to work across. If he lands in a forward position, he can give this a shake.

Open Race time:
5. Chillaxing (10)
J: Daniel Moor 59kg
54131T: Tony Gollan
Most recently won by a nose at Eagle Farm on August 8 over 2400m defeating Benzino carrying 58kg at $7.50. Before that ran on from midfield; 3rd of 10 in a Bm78 at Eagle Farm on July 25 over 2200m, 2.25 len behind Tapildoodledo with 58kg at $6.50. Racing well and is a sound each-way prospect.

Race 5 – DRINKWISE BENCHMARK 70 Handicap (1110 METRES)
No. 16 Petit Artiste
Each Way

PETIT ARTISTE (16) is the fresh runner with enough class to make this interesting.

The four-year-old mare has not won for 70 weeks, but she did win the Listed Without Fear Stakes at Morphettville by 3.46 lengths.

Now with Tony Gollan, she may find this race more suitable than some of her recent assignments.

Her recent trial was encouraging, with the mare cruising around in good time to finish a close third.

She draws well for Emily Lang and gets every chance to make an impact first-up.

First up last campaign third of 8 at Ballarat Bm70 February 22 over 1000m, 3 len behind Nimbustwothousand carrying 56.5kg at $6.50. Market watch at her first appearance under Tony Gollan.

Race 6 – XXXX Class 6 Plate (1110 METRES)
No. 6 Let’sfacethemusic
Tip of The Day

The Corey & Kylie Geran-trained gelding had a poor beginning and an awkward passage over this course and distance last start.

Despite that, he came from near the tail and produced a powerful finishing burst to finish fourth, beaten a neck.

He was a dominant all-the-way winner two starts ago when Gary Geran rode him, and the jockey returns here.

Moulin Miss should lead from the inside, but Let’sfacethemusic can settle just behind her and enjoy the perfect stalking position.

Open Race time:

Last start 4th of 11 in a Hcp at this track on August 1 over 1110m, long-neck behind Epic Proportions carrying 53.5kg at $3.60. The race before that scored a big 3.5 len win at this track on July 11 over 1110m defeating Braveheart with 60kg at $2. Expected to be very competitive once again.

Race 7 – FAMILY RACEDAY 12 SEPTEMBER No Metro Wins Handicap (1600 METRES)
No. 14 Land Bank

LAND BANK (14) takes on stronger opposition but gets in with only 53.5kg.

The Tony Gollan-trained gelding charged home to win over 1350m here last start and looked ready for a longer trip.

The rise to a mile should suit, and he should improve again with added fitness.

The gate is tricky, so Daniel Moor will need to find a spot. If he does, the lightweight runner can be competitive.

Race 8 – MORETON HIRE QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap (1200 METRES)
No. 8 Maria Clara
Each Way

MARIA CLARA (8) is the runner in this race that deserves a luck change.

The Tony & Maddy Sears-trained filly had no room for error at Eagle Farm last start. She settled near the rear, was shuffled back on the turn and then held up in the straight.

Once clear, she charged home to finish third, beaten just under a length.

She won well at the Gold Coast two starts ago and now gets Mark Du Plessis, with only 52kg on her back.

Racing well recently. Last start 3rd of 11 in a 3yo Hcp at Eagle Farm on August 8 over 1000m, 0.8 len behind Queen Olympias carrying 51.5kg at $14. Before that won by 1.4 len at Gold Coast on July 25 over 1000m on a rain affected track defeating Summer Sensation with 56kg at $3.50. Not far away last start. Going well enough to give this a shake.

Race 9 – SUNTORY – 196 BENCHMARK 85 Handicap (1350 METRES)
No. 6 Ser Joh

SER JOH (6) can improve with a better map after doing plenty of work last start.

The Rob Heathcote-trained gelding burned a lot of petrol crossing from the outside gate to lead over 1200m at Eagle Farm.

He still fought on well to finish second, beaten 2.16 lengths, despite Surprise Honey enjoying the run of the race.

He was also good first-up and won third-up last preparation at Doomben.

From the map, Taylor Marshall should be able to give him the run he needs on speed.

Race 10 – LADBROKES MEGA MULTI OPEN Handicap (1600 METRES)
No. 1 Anemacore

ANEMACORE (1) is the best horse in the race and looks ready to win again.

The Shaun Dwyer-trained gelding finally drew well last start and took advantage, settling closer before powering home to score in the shadows of the post.

His previous effort at Eagle Farm was also excellent. He drew the outside, settled last and still charged home into second, beaten just under a length.

That followed a narrow third in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap.

He steps to a mile for the first time since running second by a neck over this course and distance in March. The 61kg is the only concern, but with Michael Rodd aboard, he gets his chance.

Form hard to fault. Last start favourite; ran on from midfield and won by a neck at Eagle Farm on August 8 over 1400m defeating Express Payment carrying 60kg at $2.90. The race before that ran on strongly from last on the turn; 2nd of 9 in a Hcp at Eagle Farm on July 25 over 1400m, 0.9 len behind Sir Artie with 60kg at $8. Well-deserved winner last time and is certain to prove hard to beat.
