2022 Melbourne Cup Tips

Another incredible Spring Racing Carnival reaches its peak when a world class field of stayers contests the 2022 Melbourne Cup!

The field is set, the barrier draw is complete, and the stage is set for another thrilling edition of the $7.75 million feature at Flemington on Tuesday afternoon.

I’ve run the rule over every galloper engaged, and you can find my complete 2022 Melbourne Cup Tips below.

Suggested Bets

  • 3 Units straight out #8 Deauville Legend
  • 2 Units E/W #11 Young Werther
  • Boxed Trifecta of the selections below
2022 Melbourne Cup - Winner
No. 8 Deauville Legend

Deauville Legend is untested at two miles, but he has hardly put a hoof wrong since making his debut and with Loft’s scratching, I now have him on top of my 2022 Melbourne Cup tips.

The Sea The Stars gelding has recorded three wins and as many second placings from his seven career starts, and initially stamped his Melbourne Cup credentials by winning the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy (2615m) at Newmarket back in July.

Since then, he has finished second behind the smart stayer New London in the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood, and he was last seen recording a bullish win in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at York in August; a race that has proven to be a good Melbourne Cup form reference in years gone by.

The hype surrounding this horse is well and truly justified, and the Melbourne Cup 2022 looks the perfect race for him, and he should receive every chance from barrier 9.

2022 Melbourne Cup - 2nd
No. 11 Young Werther

I have no doubt that plenty of people will disagree with this 2022 Melbourne Cup Tip, but that is the beauty of this race. Countless form lines, a huge depth of talent, and if Prince Of Penzance proved anything in 2015, it’s that anything that gains a start can win.

With that in mind, I think that Young Werther can run a race at a lovely price.

Young Werther has actually only won once; his debut effort at Geelong a couple of years ago, but he is four-times Group 1 placed, and he just seems to grow another leg at Flemington.

I don’t think he got around The Valley at all in last week’s Cox Plate and I am happy to put a line through that run, and I thought that his performance for third in the Turnbull Stakes the start prior was excellent.

He’s untested at the two miles, but I can’t wait to see what he does, and with even luck from a wide draw, he adds some serious value to our Melbourne Cup quinella.

2022 Melbourne Cup - 3rd
No. 7 Camorra

Another talented international making his Australian debut in 2022 Melbourne Cup field is Camorra.

The Zoffany gelding made seventeen appearances at the races while under the care of Irish horseman Ger Lyons, recording four wins and a further six placings in some of Europe’s standout staying tests.

While frequently in the finish of his races, Camorra’s performance and victory in the world-renowned Curragh Cup in June of this year was arguably his best to date, and it put the rest of the Melbourne Cup field on notice.

He did finish down the order in the Irish St Leger at his last appearance abroad, but Camorra certainly has the runs on the board, and he can fight out the finish for Lindsay Park on Tuesday.

2022 Melbourne Cup - 4th
No. 12 Hoo Ya Mal

Hoo Ya Mal completes my 2022 Melbourne Cup first four.

He was actually my early picked for the race when I first started considering my bets around four months ago, and while I am slightly less confident in his winning chances than I was back then, I still wouldn’t be surprised to see it.

The Territories entire has missed placing once in his nine career starts to date, and that was his most-recent effort – an eighth placing in the St Leger at Doncaster in September.

Prior to that, his form was nothing short of outstanding. He placed in the Epsom Derby and the Gordon Stakes, and he won the March Stakes over 2816m in late August.

Hoo Ya Mal has been transferred to the care of Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, and that alone is enough to know that he’ll take his place in the 2022 Melbourne Cup field in peak order.
