First known as the VRC Royal Park Stakes, the Turnbull Stakes was inaugurated in 1865 and won by The Sign.
One of the earliest champions to win was The Barb in 1868 who had won the iconic Melbourne Cup race two years earlier in 1866.
The most famous Melbourne Cup winner to win the Turnbull Stakes was three-time hero of the world’s richest two-mile handicap, Makybe Diva, who took out the 2005 Turnbull.
The 2021 Turnbull Stakes winner Incentivise went on to win that year’s Caulfield Cup before a second to Verry Elleegant in the Melbourne Cup results.
Chris Waller’s champion mare Verry Elleegant won the 2020 Turnbull Stakes, heading an all-Waller trifecta, and finished fourth in 2021 ahead of her famous Melbourne Cup triumph in 2021.
Waller also prepared one of the most famous Turnbull Stakes winners in history with his historic four-time Cox Plate hero Winx going back-to-back in 2017 and 2018.
In fact, from 2015-2021 Waller trained five of the seven Turnbull Stakes winners. His other champions were Preferment (2015) and Kings Will Dream (2019). Kings Will Dream’s Turnbull triumph was significant as he came back from breaking his pelvis during his run behind Winx in the 2018 Cox Plate less than 12 months earlier.
Waller would go on to prepare his sixth Turnbull Stakes winner in 10 years in 2024 with Via Sistina beating stablemate Buckaroo.
Via Sistina went on to win the 2024 Cox Plate by eight lengths at her next start!
Multiple Turnbull Stakes Winners: Trenton (1865, 1866); Gladsome (1904, 1905); Tangalooma (1921, 1922); Whittier (1923, 1924); Viol D’Amour (1931, 1932); Ajax (1938, 1940); Comic Court (1949, 1950); Vo Rogue (1987, 1988); and Winx (2017, 2018).

The 2022 Turnbull Stakes winner Smokin’ Romans scored an upset at $21 odds on the back of a Group 3 Naturalism Stakes victory.
The Turnbull Stakes 2023 winner was reigning Melbourne Cup champion Gold Trip who returned to winning form with a barnstorming run down the outside to bolt home in an impressive upset at $19 for trainers Ciaron Maher & David Eustace.
The 2024 Turnbull Stakes winner was the Chris Waller-trained mare Via Sistina ($4) who narrowly accounted for her Underwood Stakes winning stablemate Buckaroo to hand Waller his sixth win in 10 years ahead of a likely Cox Plate bid on October 26.
The 2025 Turnbull Stakes winner was five-year-old Frankel entire Sir Delius ($7) for trainers Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott with jockey Craig Williams aboard on 58kg from barrier 14 of 14 to win by 1.75 lengths on a Good (3) track in a time of 2:02.82.
The 2026 Turnbull Stakes winner is TBC and will be known when the middle-distance feature runs at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday October 3.
