Sandown Stakes
Looking for this year’s Sandown Stakes betting tips, field and form guide? The experts at Neds have put together everything you need to know before this year’s race.
Run over 1,500 metres, the Sandown Stakes is a Group 3 race taking place at Sandown Racecourse. Previously held on Zipping Classic Day in November, the race was moved to the Underwood Stakes Day card at Sandown in 2021.
From 2023 the event is the sole Group status race on the card at Sandown Hillside with the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) moved to the weekend prior.
Now held at the end of September or early October, the event offers $200,000 in prize money and attracts a strong field of middle-distance runners.
Starting out as a Listed Race, this race was upgraded to Group 3 status in 1984 and is contested under quality handicap conditions.
Plenty of good horses have won the Sandown Stakes over the years including Redkirk Warrior (2016) who made history next start becoming the first sprinter in over a century to win Flemington’s Group 1 Newmarket Handicap first-up in 2017 and Fifty Stars (2018).
