Might And Power Stakes
Looking for this year’s Might And Power Stakes betting odds, field and tips? The expert tipsters at Neds have everything you need to know.
Now known as the Might And Power and recently registered as the Ladbrokes Stakes for sponsorship purposes, the Caulfield Stakes is a Group 1 race, run over 2000 metres at Caulfield during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It serves as a good lead-up to spring majors including the Caulfield Cup and the Cox Plate.
The Caulfield Stakes is part of the huge Caulfield Guineas Day card in October that features three Group 1 events.
A weight-for-age race offering $1 million in prize money the Caulfield Stakes is considered a key lead-up into the Australasian weight-for-age championship race – the Cox Plate – run at Moonee Valley at the end of October.
Ten horses have completed the Caulfield Stakes – W.S. Cox Plate double throughout history with Tranquil Star (1942), Rising Fast (1954), Kingston Town (1981-2), Bonecrusher (1986), Might and Power (1998), Northerly (2001), So You Think (2010), Ocean Park (2012), champion mare Winx (2016), and most recently Anamoe (2022).
Another potential option for Might And Power Stakes horses is Flemington’s Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) – now run as the VRC Champions Stakes – held on the last day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival with Arcadia Queen (2020) the last to do the double.
In 2021 the beaten Might And Power Stakes favourite, third place-getter Zaaki, won the Mackinnon Stakes at his next start after being scratched from that year’s Cox Plate on race morning. Zaaki also returned to run third in the 2022 Caulfield Stakes before successfully defending his Champions Stakes title.
Zaaki was scratched from the 2023 Might And Power Stakes on race day morning due to an elevated blood count.

WHICH HORSE WILL WIN THE might and power IN 2024?
Which horse will win the 2024 Might And Power Stakes comes down to a number of key form factors including the barriers, form over the 2000m distance, recent Melbourne lead-up runs and their previous Group 1 race experience.
When selecting the Caulfield Stakes winner it is also important to consider:
- Underwood Lead-Up: The Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) is the key Caulfield Stakes lead-up event with Ocean Park (2012) followed by dual Underwood Stakes champion Alligator Blood (2023) the latest to do the double. Deny Knowledge (5th in 2024) was the last Might And Power winner to come via a run in the Underwood.
- Older Runners: Horses aged five and above have dominated the Caulfield Stakes results with only eight four-year-olds winning in over 30 years – most recently Anamoe (4YO in 2022) – and the last (non-European) three-year-old winner being Mighty Kingdom (1979).
