The Colonel Reeves Stakes is part of the W.A. Champion Fillies Day race fixture at Ascot Racecourse in Perth each November and has retained Group 3 status since 2005.
Raced at over a short-sprint distance of 1100m, this set weights plus penalties event is worth $200,000 in prize money and is a key lead-up to the $1.5 million Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) held over the Perth Summer Racing Carnival.
Barakey (2012) was the last horse to complete the Colonel Reeves Stakes – Winterbottom Stakes double, a popular Perth race bet each year.
In 2020 Celebrity Queen won the Colonel Reeves Stakes before a next-up second in the Winterbottom. She also went on to win the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) in Melbourne the following autumn in a dead heat with Portland Sky.
The name of the race is owed to Perth thoroughbred history. Colonel Reeves held the first meeting of the Western Australian Turf club back in 1852.
In 2021 and 2022 both Colonel Reeves Stakes winners – Elite Street and This’ll Testya – went on to run third in the Winterbottom Stakes results. In 2021 the Winterbottom Stakes winner, Graceful Girl, improved on a lead-up second in the Colonel Reeves Stakes.
